Abstract

Implantable infusion apparatus, systems and methods that involve the use of a sensor that is associated with the catheter outlet.

Claims (43)

1. An implantable infusion device, comprising:

a housing;

a fluid transfer device carried within the housing;

a power supply carried within the housing and operably connected to the fluid transfer device;

a catheter, including a outlet, operably connected to the fluid transfer device;

a plurality of spaced sensor devices, which are not powered by the power supply within the housing, associated with the catheter and each configured to measure a within-the-catheter characteristic that is indicative of fluid flow through the catheter; and

a controller, in communication with the plurality of spaced sensor devices, that identifies a location, relative to the plurality of spaced sensor devices, of a catheter blockage or leak based on the within-the-catheter characteristic measured by the plurality of spaced sensor devices.

2. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the fluid transfer device comprises an electromagnet pump.

3. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein at least one of the sensor devices comprises a flow sensor device.

4. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the sensor devices include an antenna.

5. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the sensor devices comprise passive sensor devices.

6. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein at least one of the sensor devices comprises a pressure sensor device.

7. An implantable infusion device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein at least one of the sensor devices comprises a pressure sensor device and at least one of the sensor devices comprises a flow sensor.

8. A method of monitoring an infusion device that is implanted within a body and includes a reservoir for an infusible substance, a fluid transfer device, a catheter, and a plurality of spaced sensor devices associated with the catheter that each sense a within-the-catheter characteristic that is representative of fluid flow, the method comprising the steps of:

wirelessly querying at least two of the spaced sensor devices associated with the catheter that each sense the within-the-catheter characteristic that is representative of fluid flow; and

identifying a location, relative to the at least two spaced sensors, of a catheter blockage or leak based on the result of the wireless query.

9. A method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the step of wirelessly querying the sensor devices comprises wirelessly querying the sensor devices associated with the catheter with a device that is external to the body.

10. A method as claimed in claim 8 , further comprising the step of:

powering the sensor devices with the wireless query.

11. A method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein at least one of the at least two of the spaced sensor devices comprises a pressure sensor.

12. A method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein at least one of the at least two of the spaced sensor devices comprises a flow sensor.

13. A method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the at least two of the spaced sensor devices include a pressure sensor and a flow sensor.

14. A method of monitoring an infusion device that is implanted within a body and includes a reservoir for an infusible substance, a fluid transfer device, a catheter with an outlet through which fluid from the fluid transfer device flows into the body, and a sensor device that is located within the catheter at the catheter outlet and is configured to measure a characteristic that is indicative of fluid flow through the catheter outlet, the method comprising the step of:

measuring the characteristic that is indicative of fluid flow through the catheter outlet through which fluid from the fluid transfer device flows into the body with the sensor device that is located within the catheter at the catheter outlet through which fluid from the fluid transfer device flows into the body.

15. A method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein

the sensor device includes a pressure responsive element that senses a characteristic that is representative of pressure; and

the step of measuring the characteristic that is indicative of fluid flow comprises measuring pressure at the sensor device.

16. A method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein

the sensor device includes an element that senses a characteristic that is representative of fluid flow; and

the step of measuring the characteristic that is indicative of fluid flow comprises measuring flow with the sensor device.

17. A method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein

the catheter includes a closed distal end and the sensor device is located between the closed distal end and the outlet; and

the step of measuring the characteristic that is indicative of fluid flow comprises measuring the characteristic that is indicative of fluid flow with the sensor device that is located within the catheter between the closed distal end and the outlet.

18. A method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the step of measuring the characteristic that is indicative of fluid flow comprises wirelessly querying the sensor device.

19. A method as claimed in claim 18 , further comprising the step of:

powering the sensor device with the wireless query.

20. A method of monitoring an infusion device that is implanted within a body and includes a reservoir for an infusible substance, a fluid transfer device, a catheter with an outlet, and a pressure sensor, which includes a pressure responsive element that is located entirely within the catheter, the method comprising the steps of:

directly wirelessly querying the pressure sensor, which includes a pressure responsive element that is located entirely within the catheter, with a device that is external to the body; and

powering the pressure sensor with the wireless query.

21. A method as claimed in claim 20 , further comprising the step of:

determining whether fluid is flowing though the catheter outlet based on the result of the wireless query.

22. A method as claimed in claim 20 , wherein the catheter is connected to an outlet port, the method further comprising the step of:

observing the pressure at the outlet port.
