Abstract

An apparatus and method for introducing portals into bone is described herein. An example apparatus for introducing portals into bone includes a handle, a base, and a driving member. The driving member can be made to project past the base by operating the handle. The base is detachable from the handle. The apparatus also includes a guide coupled at a first end to the handle and at a second end to the base. The base is detachably coupled to the guide. A base coupling detachably coupling the base to the guide includes an actuating member movable between a coupled configuration wherein the base is coupled to the guide and an uncoupled configuration wherein the base is released from the guide. The actuating member is arranged so that motion of the handle toward the base moves the actuating member from the coupled configuration to the uncoupled configuration.

Claims (30)

1. An apparatus for introducing a bone portal into a bone of a subject, the apparatus comprising:

a handle;

a base detachably coupled to the handle by a mechanism comprising a base coupling, and,

a driving member;

wherein the driving member is movable between a first position wherein the driving member is retracted behind the base to a second position wherein the driving member projects past the base by operating the handle and the base is detachable from the handle by release of the base coupling, wherein the base coupling comprises an actuating member arranged so that operation of the handle to move the driving member to its second position results in the actuating member being moved to uncouple the base from the handle.

2. Apparatus according to claim 1 comprising a guide extending around the driving member wherein the base is coupled to one end of the guide and wherein another end of the guide is arranged to telescope into the handle.

3. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the guide comprises a tubular shield.

4. Apparatus according to claim 2 comprising a spring arranged to bias the guide to project outwardly of the handle.

5. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the guide is non-rotatably engaged to each of the handle and the base.

6. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the guide is substantially opaque.

Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the base coupling comprises a tab on the guide having a projection engaged in a recess on the base and the actuating member slidably engages the tab wherein axial motion of the actuating member along the tab moves the projection out of engagement with the recess.

8. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein:

the base coupling comprises first and second tabs on the guide, each tab having a projection engaged in a corresponding recess of the base;

the actuating member is arranged to slidably engage the first and second tabs; and

axial motion of the actuating member toward the base forces the projections out of engagement with the corresponding recesses.

9. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the base comprises an annular wall projecting from the base toward the handle and the base has an opening within the annular wall aligned with the driving member.

10. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the base is stiff.

11. Apparatus according to claim 1 comprising a coupling on the base adapted to releasably retain a strain relief member.

12. Apparatus according to claim 11 wherein the coupling comprises a hook.

13. Apparatus according to claim 12 wherein the hook comprises a resilient arm spaced apart from a support surface on the base, the resilient arm having a free end, a fixed end and a portion between the fixed and free ends in which a side of the arm facing the support surface projects toward the support surface.

14. Apparatus according to claim 13 comprising a guide member on at least one side of the hook, the guide member projecting from the base.

15. Apparatus according to claim 12 wherein the hook is oriented so that a tip of the hook points toward the driving member.

Apparatus according to claim 1 comprising a bone portal assembly supported on the driving member the bone portal assembly comprising an infusion tube and a strain relief member, the apparatus further comprising a coupling on the base adapted to releasably hold the strain relief member to the base.

17. Apparatus according to claim 1 comprising an adhesive layer on the base, the adhesive layer operative to removably affix the base to skin of a subject.

Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the base coupling comprises a resilient tab extending generally parallel to the driving member and the actuating member is arranged to displace an end of the resilient tab in a direction transverse to the driving member as the driving member is moved toward its second position.

19. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the base coupling comprises first and second resilient tabs extending generally parallel to the driving member.

20. Apparatus according to claim 19 comprising first and second barbs projecting respectively from the first and second tabs, the first and second barbs releasably engaged with features of the base.

21. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the releasable coupling of the base to the handle is configured to prevent rotation of the handle relative to the base when the base is coupled to the handle.

Apparatus according to claim 1 comprising a bone portal assembly supported on the drive member, the bone portal assembly comprising an infusion tube, wherein the base comprises an aperture arranged in line with the driving member and dimensional to pass the infusion tube while providing a seal around the infusion tube.

23. Apparatus according to claim 22 comprising a wall or a plurality of projections extending from the base around the aperture.
