Abstract

System, including methods, apparatus, and kits, for fixing ribs with bone plates.

Claims (30)

1. A rib plate kit, comprising:

a first elongate rib plate configured to be secured to a first rib bone, the first rib plate having a pre-operative contour comprising a population-averaged geometry sized and configured to be installed on the first rib bone, wherein the population-averaged geometry of the first rib plate defines a radius of longitudinal curvature between about 50 mm and about 300 mm, and a longitudinal twist; and

a second elongate rib plate configured to be secured to a second rib bone, the second rib plate having a pre-operative contour comprising a population-averaged geometry sized and configured to be installed on a first plurality of rib bones that does not include the first rib bone, wherein the population-averaged geometry of the second rib plate defines a radius of longitudinal curvature between about 50 mm and about 300 mm, and a longitudinal twist;

wherein at least part of the population-averaged geometry of each of the first and second rib plates is averaged over at least two ribs from different people.

2. The rib plate kit of claim 1 , wherein the first rib plate and the second rib plate each include a plurality of holes configured to receive fasteners that are designed to secure the first rib plate to the corresponding rib bone and the second rib plate to the second corresponding rib bone, respectively.

3. The rib plate kit of claim 1 , wherein the radius of curvature of the first rib plate is an out-of-plane curvature and the radius of the out-of-plane curvature is between about 75 mm and about 125 mm.

4. The rib plate kit of claim 3 , wherein the population-averaged geometry of the first rib plate further defines an in-plane longitudinal curvature with a radius between about 100 mm and about 300 mm.

5. The rib plate kit of claim 4 , wherein the longitudinal twist of the first rib plate is between about one degree and about four degrees per centimeter of plate length.

6. The rib plate kit of claim 1 , wherein the radius of curvature of the first rib plate is an out-of-plane curvature and the radius of the out-of-plane curvature is between about 125 mm and about 200 mm.

7. The rib plate kit of claim 6 , wherein the population-averaged geometry of the first rib plate further defines an in-plane longitudinal curvature with a radius between about 300 mm and about 500 mm.

8. The rib plate kit of claim 7 , wherein the longitudinal twist of the first rib plate is between about one degree and about four degrees per centimeter of plate length.

9. The rib plate kit of claim 1 , wherein the radius of curvature of the first rib plate is an out-of-plane curvature and the radius of the out-of-plane curvature is between about 150 mm and about 300 mm.

10. The rib plate kit of claim 9 , wherein the longitudinal twist of the first rib plate is between about one degree and about four degrees per centimeter of plate length.

11. The rib plate kit of claim 1 , wherein the longitudinal curvature of each of the first and second rib plates is averaged from two or more ribs with different locations in a human rib cage so that the plates are configured to be secured to each of the two or more ribs.

12. A rib plate kit, comprising:

a first elongate rib plate configured to be secured to a first rib bone, the first rib plate having a pre-operative contour comprising a population-averaged geometry sized and configured to be installed on the first rib bone, wherein the population-averaged geometry of the first rib plate defines: (1) a radius of longitudinal curvature, and (2) a longitudinal twist between about 1 degree and about 4 degrees per centimeter of plate length; and

a second elongate rib plate configured to be secured to a second rib bone, the second rib plate having a pre-operative contour comprising a population-averaged geometry sized and configured to be installed on a first plurality of rib bones that does not include the first rib bone, wherein the population-averaged geometry of the second rib plate defines: (1) a radius of longitudinal curvature, and (2) a longitudinal twist between about 1 degree and about 4 degrees per centimeter of plate length;

wherein at least part of the population-averaged geometry of each of the first and second rib plates is averaged over at least two ribs from different people.

13. The rib plate kit of claim 12 , wherein the radius of curvature of the first rib plate is an out-of-plane curvature and the radius of the out-of-plane curvature is between about 75 mm and about 125 mm.

14. The rib plate kit of claim 13 , wherein the population-averaged geometry of the first rib plate further defines an in-plane longitudinal curvature with a radius between about 100 mm and about 300 mm.

15. The rib plate kit of claim 12 , wherein the radius of curvature of the first rib plate is an out-of-plane curvature and the radius of the out-of-plane curvature is between about 125 mm and about 200 mm.

16. The rib plate kit of claim 15 , wherein the population-averaged geometry of the first rib plate further defines an in-plane longitudinal curvature with a radius between about 300 mm and about 500 mm.

17. The rib plate kit of claim 12 , wherein the radius of curvature of the first rib plate is an out-of-plane curvature and the radius of the out-of-plane curvature is between about 150 mm and about 300 mm.

18. A rib plate kit, comprising:

a first elongate rib plate configured to be secured to a first rib bone, the first rib plate having a pre-operative contour comprising a population-averaged geometry sized and configured to be installed on the first rib bone, wherein the population-averaged geometry of the first rib plate defines an in-plane longitudinal curvature having a radius between about 100 mm and about 300 mm, and an out-of-plane longitudinal curvature having a radius between about 75 mm and about 125 mm;
