Abstract

A method of dispensing sprayable material in a desired spray pattern using an actuator member, a resilient outlet member, and a movable member. The actuator member has a plurality of resilient finger projections. The resilient outlet member is arranged at least partly between the finger projections. The movable member is supported on the actuator member to form a dispensing path extending from the interior of the aerosol chamber to the exterior of the aerosol chamber through a valve assembly, the actuator member, and the outlet member. The movable member acts on the outlet member to deform the plurality of finger projections towards each other to alter an effective cross-sectional area of at least a portion of a dispensing path to control fluid flow along the dispensing path and thereby cause the sprayable material to be dispensed in the desired spray pattern.

Claims (31)

1. A method of dispensing sprayable material in a desired spray pattern, comprising the steps of:

providing an aerosol container defining an aerosol chamber adapted to contain sprayable material;

mounting a valve assembly on the aerosol container to form an aerosol assembly, where

the valve assembly is normally in a closed configuration in which sprayable material is substantially prevented from flowing out of the aerosol assembly through the valve assembly, and

when the valve assembly is arranged in an open configuration, sprayable material is allowed to flow out of the aerosol assembly through the valve assembly;

providing an actuator member comprising a plurality of resilient finger projections;

arranging a resilient outlet member at least partly between the plurality of finger projections;

supporting a movable member on the actuator member to define an actuator assembly;

arranging the sprayable material and propellant material within the aerosol assembly;

supporting the actuator assembly on the valve assembly to define a dispensing path extending from an interior of the aerosol chamber to an exterior of the aerosol chamber through the valve assembly, the actuator member, and the outlet member;

displacing the movable member in a first direction such that the movable member acts on the outlet member to deform the plurality of finger projections towards each other from an undeformed position to alter an effective cross-sectional area of at least a portion of a dispensing path to control fluid flow along the dispensing path and thereby cause the sprayable material to be dispensed in the desired spray pattern, and

displacing the actuator member to place the valve assembly in the open configuration to allow the propellant to force the sprayable material out of the container assembly along the dispensing path.

2. A method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising the step of displacing the movable member in a second direction such that the movable member acts on the outlet member to allow the plurality of finger projections to move towards the undeformed position, thereby altering an effective cross-sectional area of at least the portion of a dispensing path to control fluid flow along the dispensing path and thereby cause the sprayable material to be dispensed in the desired spray pattern.

3. A method as recited in claim 1 , in which:

the sprayable material is texture material; and

the desired spray pattern causes the texture material to be deposited on a surface in a desired texture pattern.

4. A method as recited in claim 3 , further comprising the step of displacing the movable member such that the desired texture pattern formed by the desired spray pattern substantially matches a pre-existing texture pattern on the surface.

5. A method as recited in claim 1 , in which the step of providing the actuator member comprising the step of providing at least two opposing resilient finger projections, where movement of the movable member displaces at least one of the two opposing resilient finger projections towards the other of the two opposing resilient finger projections such that the resilient outlet member is pinched between the two opposing resilient finger projections.

6. A method as recited in claim 1 , in which:

the step of providing the actuator member further comprises the step of forming a first threaded portion on the actuator member;

the step of providing the movable member comprises the step of forming a second threaded portion on the movable member; and

the step of displacing the movable member in the first direction comprises the steps of

engaging the first and second threaded portions, and

rotating the movable member relative to the actuator member.

7. A method as recited in claim 1 , in which:

the step of providing the actuator member further comprises the step of forming a first threaded portion on the actuator member;

the step of providing the movable member comprises the step of forming a second threaded portion on the movable member; and

the step of displacing the movable member relative to the actuator member comprises the steps of

engaging the first and second threaded portions, and

rotating the movable member in a first rotational direction relative to the actuator member to displace the movable member in the first direction; and

rotating the movable member in a second rotational direction relative to the actuator member to displace the movable member in the second direction.
