Abstract

A system and method for aerodynamic fairings including an undercarriage fairing. The undercarriage fairing includes multiple panels including at least two front panels and at least two rear panels. The at least two front panels are connected in a front portion under the trailer. The at least two rear panels are positioned in front of a wheel undercarriage at sides of the trailer. One of the at least two front panels and one of the at least two rear panels are interconnected on both sides of the trailer. The undercarriage fairing further includes supports connected to the frame of the trailer. The supports are connected to the at least two rear panels.

Claims (25)

1. An undercarriage fairing comprising:

a plurality of panels comprising at least two front panels and at least two rear panels, wherein the at least two front panels are connected together in a front portion under the trailer, wherein an edge of a first front panel of the at least two front panels is in contact with an edge of a second front panel of the at least two front panels, wherein the at least two rear panels are positioned in front of a wheel undercarriage at sides of the trailer, and wherein one of the at least two front panels and one of the at least two rear panels are interconnected on both sides of the trailer;

supports connected to the frame of the trailer, wherein the supports are connected to at least the at least two rear panels;

wherein the front portion of the at least two front panels are connected directly together utilizing an angled bracket on an exterior surface, and

wherein a bridge connects the front portion of the at least two front panels on an interior surface, and wherein the bridge extends above a top edge of the at least two front panels to connect to the trailer.

2. The undercarriage fairing according to claim 1 , wherein the trailer is a pneumatic container trailer.

3. The undercarriage fairing according to claim 1 , wherein components of the undercarriage fairing including the plurality of panels and the supports are shippable as a flat package.

4. The undercarriage fairing according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of panels are thermoplastic olefin.

5. The undercarriage fairing according to claim 1 , wherein the supports are connected to the plurality of panels by connectors utilizing carriage bolts with a defined separation to support thermal expansion of the plurality of panels.

6. The undercarriage fairing according to claim 1 , wherein the supports include U-channels and brackets for clamping against the frame of the trailer.

7. The undercarriage fairing according to claim 1 , wherein the supports include diagonal supports that are connected to a bottom portion of the at least two rear panels.

8. The undercarriage fairing according to claim 1 , wherein the at least two front panels include cut-outs for the frame of the trailer.

9. The undercarriage fairing according to claim 1 , wherein the front portion of the at least two front panels are disposed above a discharge pipe.

10. The undercarriage fairing according to claim 1 , wherein the supports include brackets and U-channels, wherein the brackets are bolted to the at least two rear panels, wherein the brackets are bolted to the U-channels, and wherein the U-channels are clamped to beams of the frame.

11. A pneumatic container trailer with an undercarriage fairing, comprising:

the pneumatic container trailer including a frame;

a plurality of panels comprising at least two front panels and at least two rear panels, wherein the at least two front panels are connected together in a front portion under the pneumatic container trailer, wherein an edge of a first front panel of the at least two front panels is in contact with an edge of a second front panel of the at least two front panels, wherein the at least two rear panels are positioned in front of a wheel undercarriage at sides of the trailer, and wherein one of the at least two front panels and one of the at least two rear panels are interconnected on both sides of the pneumatic container trailer;

supports connected to the frame of the pneumatic container trailer, wherein the supports are connected to the at least two rear panels;

wherein the front portion of the at least two front panels are connected utilizing an angled bracket on an exterior surface, and

wherein a bridge connects the front portion of the at least two front panels on an interior surface, and wherein the bridge extends above a top edge of the at least two front panels to connect to the trailer.

12. The pneumatic container trailer according to claim 11 , wherein the supports are connected to the plurality of panels by connectors utilizing carriage bolts with a defined separation to support thermal expansion of the plurality of panels.

13. The pneumatic container trailer according to claim 11 , wherein components of the undercarriage fairing including the plurality of panels and the supports are shippable as a flat package.

14. The pneumatic container trailer according to claim 11 , wherein the supports include brackets and U-channels, wherein the brackets are bolted to the at least two rear panels, wherein the brackets are bolted to the U-channels, and wherein the U-channels are clamped to beams of the frame.

15. The undercarriage fairing according to claim 1 , wherein the angled bracket comprises a v-shaped bracket.

16. The undercarriage fairing according to claim 11 , wherein the angled bracket comprises a v-shaped bracket.
