Abstract

A lifting system can be used to move an item between a use position and a stowed position in a structure such as a vehicle or home. The item may be an article of furniture, an appliance, a storage unit, a platform, workbench, or the like. The lifting system may be motorized and/or utilize a flexible drive to move the item. The lifting system may be used to reciprocally move the item between the use position and the stowed position in the structure.

1. A vehicle comprising:

a bed that moves vertically between a lowered position where the bed is positioned to receive one or more persons to sleep thereon and a raised position where the bed is stowed;

a first moving member coupled to the bed;

a guide member coupled to the vehicle, the guide member being oriented vertically in the vehicle, the guide member cooperating with the first moving member to guide vertical movement of the bed;

a second moving member coupled to the bed;

a first rotatable member positioned below the first moving member;

a second rotatable member positioned above the second moving member; and

a flexible drive member coupled to the first moving member and the second moving member, the flexible drive member including a first portion extending from the first moving member to the first rotatable member and a second portion extending from the second moving member to the second rotatable member;

wherein raising the first moving member lengthens the first portion and shortens the second portion which raises the second moving member; and

wherein lowering the first moving member shortens the first portion and lengthens the second portion which lowers the second moving member.

2. The vehicle of claim 1 wherein the guide member includes a channel and at least a portion of the first moving member moves in the channel.

3. The vehicle of claim 1 comprising a support member that supports the second rotatable member.

4. The vehicle of claim 3 comprising a cross member coupled to and extending at least approximately horizontally between the guide member and the support member.

5. The vehicle of claim 1 wherein the length of the flexible drive member between the first moving member and the second moving member remains the same as the first moving member and the second moving member move vertically.

6. The vehicle of claim 1 wherein the first moving member and the second moving member are coupled to the same side of the bed.

7. The vehicle of claim 1 wherein the guide member is a first guide member and the flexible drive member is a first flexible drive member, the vehicle comprising:

a third moving member coupled to the bed;

a second guide member coupled to the vehicle, the second guide member being oriented vertically in the vehicle, the second guide member cooperating with the third moving member to guide vertical movement of the bed;

a fourth moving member coupled to the bed;

a third rotatable member positioned below the third moving member;

a fourth rotatable member positioned above the fourth moving member; and

a second flexible drive member coupled to the third moving member and the fourth moving member, the second flexible drive member including a third portion extending from the third moving member to the third rotatable member and a fourth portion extending from the fourth moving member to the fourth rotatable member;

wherein raising the third moving member lengthens the third portion and shortens the fourth portion which raises the fourth moving member; and

wherein lowering the third moving member shortens the third portion and lengthens the fourth portion which lowers the fourth moving member.

8. The vehicle of claim 7 comprising a drive member positioned between the first guide member and the second guide member, the drive member being used to synchronize movement of the first moving member and the third moving member.

9. The vehicle of claim 1 wherein the flexible drive member extends downward from the first moving member to a first rotatable member, upward from the first rotatable member to an intermediate rotatable member, sideways from the intermediate rotatable member to a third rotatable member, and downward from the third rotatable member to the second moving member.

10. The vehicle of claim 1 comprising a motor that moves the first moving member vertically.

11. The vehicle of claim 1 wherein the motor rotates a toothed wheel to move the first moving member vertically.

12. The vehicle of claim 1 wherein gravity moves the second moving member lower when the first portion of the flexible drive member is shortened.

13. The vehicle of claim 1 wherein the vehicle is a recreational vehicle.

14. A vehicle comprising:

a bed that moves vertically between a lowered position where the bed is positioned to receive one or more persons to sleep thereon and a raised position where the bed is stowed;

a first moving member coupled to the bed;

a second moving member coupled to the bed; and

a flexible drive member coupled to the first moving member and the second moving member;

wherein raising the first moving member exerts tension on the flexible drive member which raises the second moving member;

wherein lowering the first moving member releases tension on the flexible drive member which lowers the second moving member; and

wherein the flexible drive member extends downward from the first moving member to a first rotatable member, upward from the first rotatable member to an intermediate rotatable member, sideways from the intermediate rotatable member to a second rotatable member, and downward from the second rotatable member to the second moving member.

15. The vehicle of claim 14 wherein the length of the flexible drive member between the first moving member and the second moving member remains the same as the first moving member and the second moving member move vertically.

16. The vehicle of claim 14 wherein the flexible drive member is a first flexible drive member, the vehicle comprising:

a third moving member coupled to the bed;

a fourth moving member coupled to the bed; and

a second flexible drive member coupled to the third moving member and the fourth moving member;

wherein raising the third moving member exerts tension on the second flexible drive member which raises the fourth moving member; and

wherein lowering the third moving member releases tension on the second flexible drive member which lowers the second moving member.

17. The vehicle of claim 16 wherein the first moving member and the second moving member move adjacent to a first wall of the vehicle and the third moving member and the fourth moving member move adjacent to a second wall of the vehicle, wherein the first wall is positioned opposite the second wall.

18. The vehicle of claim 14 comprising a motor that moves the first moving member vertically.

19. The vehicle of claim 14 wherein the motor rotates a toothed wheel to move the first moving member vertically.

20. A bed lift system comprising:

a first moving member configured to be coupled to a bed;

a second moving member configured to be coupled to the bed;

a flexible drive member coupled to the first moving member and the second moving member, the flexible drive member including a first portion extending downward from the first moving member and a second portion extending upward from the second moving member;

wherein raising the first moving member lengthens the first portion and shortens the second portion which raises the second moving member and lowering the first moving member shortens the first portion and lengthens the second portion which lowers the second moving member.

21. The bed lift system of claim 20 wherein the length of the flexible drive member between the first moving member and the second moving member remains the same as the first moving member and the second moving member move vertically.
