Abstract

A tissue ablation probe is provided. The probe comprises a proximal electrode element, which includes a proximal electrode stem and a deployable proximal electrode array, and a distal electrode element, which includes a distal electrode stem and a deployable distal electrode array. The probe is configured, such that a majority of electrical energy conveyed between the proximal and distal electrode elements is conveyed between distal termini of the electrode arrays, whereas a relatively small amount of the electrical energy is conveyed between the electrode stems. One or more of the electrodes on the arrays may be optionally insulated to further enhance the electrical characteristics of the arrays.

Claims (13)

1 - 55 . (canceled)

56 . A bipolar tissue ablation probe for creating a lesion within a target tissue comprising:

a proximal electrode array configured for moving from a retracted configuration to a deployed configuration by proximal retraction;

a distal electrode array configured for moving from a retracted configuration to a deployed configuration by distal advancement;

a shaft carrying the proximal and distal electrode arrays, wherein the shaft has an electrically insulative portion that separates the proximal and distal electrode arrays, the shaft having a distal point of deployment for the distal electrode array and a proximal point of deployment for the proximal electrode array; and

wherein the proximal electrode array and the distal electrode array each comprise respective everting needle electrodes when in the deployed configuration, wherein the everting needle electrodes of the proximal electrode array and the distal electrode array are partially coated with an insulating material along a length of the everting needle electrodes from their respective points of deployment.

57 . The bipolar tissue ablation probe of claim 56 , wherein the insulating material comprises at least one of plastic, rubber, and a polymer.

58 . The bipolar tissue ablation probe of claim 56 , wherein everting needle electrodes of the proximal electrode array and the distal electrode array are coated along a length thereof from their respective points of deployment to a peak of an arch formed by the everting needle electrodes.

59 . The bipolar tissue ablation probe of claim 56 , wherein the electrically insulative portion comprises an electrically insulative material disposed over the shaft.

60 . The bipolar tissue ablation probe of claim 56 , wherein the shaft comprises a proximal conductive tube from which the proximal electrode array is deployed and a distal conductive tube from which the distal electrode array is deployed.

61 . The bipolar tissue ablation probe of claim 56 , wherein the proximal and distal electrode arrays have respective concave faces that face each other when in the deployed configuration.

62 . The bipolar tissue ablation probe of claim 56 , wherein activation of the proximal and distal electrode arrays in a bipolar fashion creates a lesion within the target tissue that necroses from an outer region and progresses inwardly.

63 . The bipolar tissue ablation probe of claim 56 , wherein the electrically insulative portion of the shaft is continuous.
