Abstract

A communication device includes a display screen upon which information is displayed. A microprocessor configured to execute at least one notification program is provided that displays a notification descriptive of an access control request on the display screen. The at least one notification program is programmed to receive data indicative of an access control request and to receive data descriptive of the access control request. Additionally, the at least one notification program is further programmed to display a notification indicative of the access control request and comprising an explanation of the access control request based on the received descriptive data.

Claims (49)

1. A communication device comprising:

at least one processor enabled to output at least one notification descriptive of an access control request, the access control request for changing a setting on the communication device;

the at least one notification indicating an application on the communication device making the access control request, the at least one notification providing an explanation that the application is proposing to change the setting of the communication device, and the at least one notification further including an explanation of the access control request and also providing a user-selectable interface element to provide further information explaining the access control request, including an identification of the setting on the communication device subject to the access control request;

the at least one processor further enabled to provide the further information explaining the access control request in response to selection of the user-selectable interface element;

the at least one notification including a user-selectable option to allow or deny the access control request; and

wherein the at least one processor, in response to user input received to select the user-selectable option, changes the setting on the communication device.

2. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the setting relates to a positioning device capable of determining location information corresponding to a location of the communication device and the at least one notification describes an intended use of the location information.

3. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one notification describes a reason for the request.

4. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one notification describes a context for the request.

5. The communication device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is further enabled to receive data descriptive of the access control request from the application.

6. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the application is a maps application.

7. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the application is a gaming application.

8. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the application is a calendar application.

9. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the setting comprises a hardware setting.

10. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the setting comprises a program setting.

11. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the setting is a device setting.

12. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the setting is a connection setting.

13. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the access control request is further to access an address book and the at least one notification further describes accessing an address book on the communication device.

14. A method of processing an access control request received at a communication device, the method comprising:

outputting at least one notification descriptive of an access control request, the access control request for changing a setting on the communication device;

the at least one notification indicating an application on the communication device making the access control request, the at least one notification providing an explanation that the application is proposing to change the setting of the communication device, the at least one notification further including an explanation of the access control request and also providing a user-selectable interface element to provide further information explaining the access control request, including an identification of the setting on the communication device subject to the access control request;

providing the further information explaining the access control request in response to selection of the user-selectable interface element;

the at least one notification including a user-selectable option to allow or deny the access control request; and

in response to user input selecting the user-selectable option, changing the setting.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the setting relates to a positioning device capable of determining location information corresponding to a location of the communication device, and the at least one notification describes an intended use of the location information.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising receiving data descriptive of the access control request from the application.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the at least one notification describes a reason for the request.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the at least one notification describes a context for the request.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the application is a maps application.

20. The method of claim 14 , wherein the application is a gaming application.

21. The method of claim 14 , wherein the application is a calendar application.

22. The method of claim 14 , wherein the setting comprises at least one of a hardware setting, a program setting, a device setting, or a connection setting.

23. The method of claim 14 , wherein the access control request is further to access an address book and the at least one notification further describes accessing an address book on the communication device.

24. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having computer-executable instructions for controlling a communication device, the computer-executable instructions causing the communication device to:

output at least one notification descriptive of an access control request, the access control request for changing a setting on the communication device;

the at least one notification indicating an application on the communication device making the access control request, the at least one notification providing an explanation that the application is proposing to change the setting of the communication device, the at least one notification further including an explanation of the access control request and also providing a user-selectable interface element to provide further information explaining the access control request, including an identification of the setting on the communication device subject to the access control request;

provide the further information explaining the access control request in response to selection of the user-selectable interface element;

the at least one notification including a user-selectable option to allow or deny the access control request; and

in response to user input selecting the user-selectable option, changing the setting.

25. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 24 wherein the setting comprises at least one of a hardware setting, a program setting, a device setting, or a connection setting.

26. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 24 , wherein the setting relates to a positioning device capable of determining location information corresponding to a location of the communication device, and the at least one notification describes an intended use of the location information.

27. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 24 , wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the communication device to further:

receive data descriptive of the access control request from the application.

28. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 24 , wherein the at least one notification describes a reason for the request.

29. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 24 , wherein the at least one notification describes a context for the request.

30. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 24 , wherein the application is a maps application.

31. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 24 , wherein the application is a gaming application.

32. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 24 , wherein the application is a calendar application.

33. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 24 , wherein the access control request is further to access an address book and the at least one notification further describes accessing an address book on the communication device.
