Abstract

A vehicle intersection warning method is provided. The method comprises exchanging host vehicle information and remote vehicle information between a host vehicle and a remote vehicle, determining a presence of a road intersection based on at least one of the host vehicle information and the remote vehicle information. determining, by operation of a processor, whether a possibility of contact between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle exists proximate the intersection based on the exchanged host vehicle information and remote vehicle information, and evaluating an operating condition of a brake of the host vehicle while the possibility of contact exists to determine a type of warning to provide to the host vehicle.

Claims (55)

1. A vehicle intersection warning method comprising:

generating host vehicle information;

receiving remote vehicle information;

determining a presence of a road intersection based on at least one of the host vehicle information and the remote vehicle information;

determining, by operation of a processor, whether a possibility of contact between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle exists proximate the intersection based on the exchanged host vehicle information and remote vehicle information; and

evaluating an operating condition of a brake of the host vehicle while the possibility of contact exists to determine a type of warning from a plurality of warnings to provide to the host vehicle.

2. The vehicle intersection warning method according to claim 1 , further comprising

refraining from providing the warning while the evaluating determines that the operating condition indicates that the brake of the host vehicle is in an engaged condition to retain the host vehicle in a stationary position.

3. The vehicle intersection warning method according to claim 1 , further comprising

providing the warning while the evaluating determines that the operating condition indicates that the brake of the host vehicle is in a disengaged condition to enable the host vehicle to move from a stationary position and the possibility of contact exists.

4. The vehicle intersection warning method according to claim 3 , wherein

the providing the warning includes operating the brake to change from the disengaged condition to an engaged condition to retain the host vehicle in a stationary position.

5. The vehicle intersection warning method according to claim 1 , further comprising

evaluating a speed of the host vehicle; and

refraining from providing the warning while the evaluating of the speed determines that the speed of the host vehicle will permit the remote vehicle to pass through the intersection without contacting the host vehicle.

6. The vehicle intersection warning method according to claim 1 , further comprising

evaluating a speed of the host vehicle; and

providing the warning while the evaluating of the speed determines that the speed of the host vehicle can permit the remote vehicle to contact the host vehicle.

7. The vehicle intersection warning method according to claim 1 , further comprising

providing the warning as at least one of an audible warning, a visual warning and a tactile warning at the host vehicle while the evaluating determines that the operating condition of the brake of the host vehicle can permit contact between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle.

8. The vehicle intersection warning method according to claim 1 , wherein

the determining of the presence of the road intersection includes determining whether the host vehicle and the remote vehicle are travelling on converging paths based on at least one of the host vehicle information and the remote vehicle information.

9. The vehicle intersection warning method according to claim 1 , wherein

the determining of whether the possibility of contact between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle exists includes calculating a latitude and longitude of a contact location, determining a first time for the host vehicle to travel a first distance from the current location of the host vehicle to the contact location, determining a second time for the remote vehicle to travel a second distance from the current location of the remote vehicle to the contact location, and calculating a difference between the first and second times to determine whether the vehicles will be at the contact location at the same time.

10. The vehicle intersection warning method according to claim 1 , wherein

the determining of whether the possibility of contact between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle exists further includes determining an east-west distance and a north-south distance between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle, determining a relative distance between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle based on the east-west distance and the north-south distance, and determining an angle heading between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle.

11. A vehicle intersection warning method comprising:

generating host vehicle information;

receiving remote vehicle information;

determining a presence of a road intersection based on at least one of the host vehicle information and the remote vehicle information:

determining, by operation of a processor, whether a possibility of contact between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle exists proximate the intersection based on the host vehicle information and remote vehicle information, including determining respective times for the host vehicle and the remote vehicle to travel from their respective current locations to a contact location proximate the intersection; and

evaluating an operating condition of a brake of the host vehicle while the possibility of contact exists to determine a type of warning to provide to the host vehicle.

12. A vehicle intersection warning system comprising:

a communication device on the host vehicle configured to transmit host vehicle information and receive remote vehicle information; and

a controller on the host vehicle configured to determine a presence of a road intersection based on at least one of the host vehicle information and the remote vehicle information, determine whether a possibility of contact between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle exists proximate the intersection based on the host vehicle information and remote vehicle information, and evaluate an operating condition of a brake of the host vehicle while the possibility of contact exists to determine a type of warning from a plurality of warnings to provide to the host vehicle.

13. The vehicle intersection warning system according to claim 12 , wherein

the controller is further configured to refrain from providing the warning while the evaluating determines that the operating condition indicates that the brake of the host vehicle is in an engaged condition to retain the host vehicle in a stationary position.

14. The vehicle intersection warning system according to claim 12 , wherein

the controller is further configured to provide the warning while the evaluating determines that the operating condition indicates that the brake of the host vehicle is in a disengaged condition to enable the host vehicle to move from a stationary position and the possibility of contact exists.

15. The vehicle intersection warning system according to claim 14 , wherein

the controller is further configured to provide the warning by operating the brake to change from the disengaged condition to an engaged condition to retain the host vehicle in a stationary position.

16. The vehicle intersection warning system according to claim 12 , wherein

the controller is further configured to evaluate a speed of the host vehicle, and refrain from providing the warning while the evaluating of the speed determines that the speed of the host vehicle will permit the remote vehicle to pass through the intersection without contacting the host vehicle.

17. The vehicle intersection warning system according to claim 12 , wherein

the controller is further configured to evaluate a speed of the host vehicle, and provide the warning while the evaluating of the speed determines that the speed of the host vehicle can permit the remote vehicle to contact the host vehicle.

18. The vehicle intersection warning system according to claim 12 , wherein

the controller is further configured to determine the presence of the road intersection by determining whether the host vehicle and the remote vehicle are travelling on converging paths based on at the least one of the host vehicle information and the remote vehicle information.

19. The vehicle intersection warning system according to claim 12 , wherein

the controller is further configured to determine whether the possibility of contact between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle exists by determining respective times for the host vehicle and the remote vehicle to travel from their respective current locations to a contact location proximate the intersection.

20. The vehicle intersection warning system according to claim 12 , wherein

the controller is further configured to determine whether the possibility of contact between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle exists by calculating a latitude and longitude of a contact location, determining a first time for the host vehicle to travel a first distance from the current location of the host vehicle to the contact location, determining a second time for the remote vehicle to travel a second distance from the current location of the remote vehicle to the contact location, and calculating a difference between the first and second times to determine whether the vehicles will be at the contact location at the same time.

21. The vehicle intersection warning system according to claim 12 , wherein

the controller is further configured to determine whether the possibility of contact between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle exists by determining an east-west distance and a north-south distance between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle, determining a relative distance between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle based on the east-west distance and the north-south distance, and determining an angle heading between the host vehicle and the remote vehicle.
