Abstract

Correction of a scoliotic curve in a spine comprises the steps of implanting an expanding rod isolated completely under the skin and attached to selected portions of the scoliotic curve of the spine at opposing ends of the rod; and producing a controlled force by means of expansion of the rod over at an extended time period under external control until a desire spinal curve is obtained. An incremental force is generated to stretch the scoliotic curve of the spine between the selected portions where attachment of the rod is defined. The controlled force is provided steadily for at least one month or alternatively 1-3 months. Multiple rods may be employed each associated with a different scoliotic curve of the spine or a different portion of the scoliotic curve.

Claims (25)

1. A system for treating curvature of a spine comprising:

an expandable telescoping rod having first and second ends and configured for subcutaneous placement along a length of the spine, the first end configured to couple to a first portion of the spine and the second end configured to couple to a second portion of the spine, the expandable telescoping rod comprising a hollow outer sleeve and an inner sleeve telescopically disposed in the hollow outer sleeve;

a drive unit disposed in the hollow outer sleeve of the expandable telescoping rod and operatively coupled to the inner sleeve of the expandable telescoping rod, wherein actuation of the drive unit moves the inner sleeve longitudinally relative to the outer sleeve;

an anti-rotation member comprising a pin disposed on an outer surface of the inner sleeve that extends radially outward through a longitudinal slot defined in a wall of the hollow outer sleeve, wherein the anti-rotation member is configured to prevent relative rotation between the inner sleeve and the hollow outer sleeve and thereby facilitate treatment of the curvature of the spine by allowing relative longitudinal movement of the inner sleeve relative to the hollow outer sleeve over substantially the length of the slot while maintaining the rotational orientation between the first portion of the spine and the second portion of the spine; and

an external device configured to non-invasively convey energy to the drive unit, wherein the conveyed energy actuates the drive unit; and

wherein at least a portion of the expandable telescoping rod is in a curved state when initially placed along a length of the spine.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a screw operatively coupled to the drive unit.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the drive unit generates an incremental force on the spine when actuated.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the drive unit comprises a rotational motor.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the drive unit comprises a linear motor.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the drive unit comprises a propelling element magnetically coupled to a moving magnetic field source.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the expandable telescoping rod has a diameter of ½ inch or less.

8. A system for treating curvature of a spine comprising:

a first expandable telescoping rod having first and second ends and configured for subcutaneous placement along a length of the spine, the first end configured to couple to a first portion of the spine and the second end configured to couple to a second portion of the spine, the first expandable telescoping rod comprising a hollow outer sleeve and an inner sleeve telescopically disposed in the hollow outer sleeve;

a drive unit disposed in the hollow outer sleeve of the first expandable telescoping rod and operatively coupled to the inner sleeve of the first expandable telescoping rod, wherein actuation of the drive unit moves the inner sleeve longitudinally relative to the outer sleeve of the first expandable telescoping rod;

a second expandable telescoping rod having first and second ends and configured for subcutaneous placement along a length of the spine, the first end configured to couple to a third portion of the spine and the second end configured to couple to a fourth portion of the spine, the second expandable telescoping rod comprising a hollow outer sleeve and an inner sleeve telescopically disposed in the hollow outer sleeve;

a drive unit disposed in the hollow outer sleeve of the second expandable telescoping rod and operatively coupled to the inner sleeve of the second expandable telescoping rod, wherein actuation of the drive unit moves the inner sleeve longitudinally relative to the outer sleeve of the second expandable telescoping rod;

an anti-rotation member associated with each of the first telescoping rod and the second telescoping rod, wherein each anti-rotation member comprises a pin disposed on an outer surface of the inner sleeve that extends radially outward through a longitudinal slot defined in a wall of the hollow outer sleeve, wherein each anti-rotation member is configured to prevent relative rotation between the inner sleeve and the hollow outer sleeve of each respective expandable telescoping rod and thereby facilitate treatment of the curvature of the spine by allowing substantially longitudinal movement of the inner sleeve relative to the hollow outer sleeve over substantially the length of the slot of each respective expandable telescoping rod while maintaining the rotational orientation between the first and second portion of the spine and between the third and fourth portion of the spine; and

an external device configured to non-invasively convey energy to at least one of the first and second drive units, wherein the conveyed energy actuates at least one of the first and second drive units; and

wherein at least a portion of the first expandable telescoping rod and at least a portion of the second expandable telescoping rod are in a curved state when initially placed along a length of the spine.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the drive unit of the first expandable telescoping rod is configured to be actuated separately from the drive unit of the second expandable telescoping rod when the first expandable telescoping rod and the second expandable telescoping rod are implanted along the spine of a subject having scoliosis.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the drive units of the first and second expandable telescoping rods comprise rotational motors.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the drive units of the first and second expandable telescoping rods comprise linear motors.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the drive units of the first and second expandable telescoping rods comprise propelling elements magnetically coupled to a moving magnetic field source.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first and second expandable telescoping rods have a diameter of ½ inch or less.
