Abstract

Tissue matrices having anti-microbial properties are provided. In certain embodiments, the tissue matrices include cationic anti-microbial agents that form a stable bond with the tissue matrices without adversely affecting the biologic properties of the tissue matrices.

Claims (11)

1. A method of preparing a modified tissue matrix comprising:

selecting an acellular dermal matrix; and

contacting the acellular dermal matrix with an aqueous solution containing a cationic anti-microbial agent, wherein the agent stably binds to the acellular dermal matrix by passive adsorption,

wherein the aqueous solution is non-denaturing and the anti-microbial agent comprises at least one of benzethonium chloride, chlorhexidine, benzalkonium chloride, silver, poly-hexa-methylene biguanide hydrochloride, cationic peptides, or quaternary ammonium compounds.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acellular dermal matrix comprises an acellular porcine dermal matrix.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acellular dermal matrix is not cross-linked or denatured during binding of the anti-microbial agent.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anti-microbial agent is not covalently modified by binding to the acellular dermal matrix.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the antimicrobial agent remains bound to the modified tissue matrix when placed in a non-denaturing aqueous solution,

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bound anti-microbial agent retains greater than 75% of its activity when the modified tissue matrix is placed in PBS for two weeks at room temperature.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein contacting the acellular dermal matrix with an aqueous solution containing a cationic anti-microbial agent comprises contacting the acellular dermal matrix with an aqueous solution for at least four hours at room temperature.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising exposing the acellular dermal matrix to E-beam radiation.
