Abstract

An apparatus for controlling application of a substance to a substrate involves the use of a gating agent that blocks the substance from or attracts the substance to the substrate. The apparatus may utilize ink jet technology to apply the gating agent directly to the substrate or to an intermediate surface. The gating agent includes a nonionic surfactant, and water. The gating agent does not contain a discernable amount of dye, pigment or other colorant agent.

Claims (35)

1. A device for use in a high speed variable print operation comprising:

a housing having a surface;

a series of ejection nozzles disposed on the surface; and

a source of a gating agent communicating with the nozzles, the gating agent comprising:

from about 0.05 to about 10% by weight of a blocking agent having a multifunctional potential;

up to about 15% by weight of a surface modifying compound;

up to about 8% by weight of viscosity modifier such that the gating agent has a viscosity within the range of about 1 to about 14 mPa s; and

the balance of the gating agent comprises a solvent;

wherein the gating agent has a static surface tension of less than about 40 dynes/cm;

wherein a printing agent is applied to a further surface, wherein the gating agent is ejected in a pattern on at least one of a final print medium, the printing agent applied to the further surface, and the further surface, and wherein the printing agent is transferred from the further surface to the final print medium.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the pattern of the gating agent determines where the print image is formed.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the gating agent blocks the transfer of the printing agent to the web in areas where the gating agent has been ejected.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the gating agent does not contain a discernable amount of dye, pigment, or other colorant.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the surfactant comprises a nonionic surfactant having a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance between about 15 and about 30.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the gating agent has a viscosity in the range of from about 3 to about 5 mPa s.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the gating agent has up to about 3% by weight of a surface modifying compound.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises an ink jet cartridge.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the gating agent is ejected onto the further surface.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the further surface comprises one of a cylinder, a blanket cylinder, a sheet, and a web.

11. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a control device.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the control device is adapted to control the ejection of the gating agent from the nozzles.

13. The device of claim 12 , wherein the housing comprises an ink jet cartridge, and wherein the control device is adapted to control the ink jet cartridge to print image data.

14. The device of claim 12 , wherein the ink jet cartridge applies the gating agent in non-image areas.

15. A device for use in a high speed variable print operation comprising:

a housing having a surface;

a series of ejection nozzles disposed on the surface; and

a source of a gating agent communicating with the nozzles, the gating agent comprising:

from about 0.05 to about 10% by weight of a blocking agent having a multifunctional potential;

up to about 15% by weight of a surface modifying compound;

up to about 8% by weight of viscosity modifier such that the gating agent has a viscosity within the range of about 1 to about 14 mPa s; and

the balance of the gating agent comprises a solvent;

wherein the gating agent has a static surface tension of less than about 40 dynes/cm;

wherein the housing is disposed within a lithographic printing press.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the lithographic printing press comprises a transport for media.

17. The device of claim 16 , wherein the gating agent is ejected onto the media as the media moves past the housing.
