Abstract

The invention relates generally to methods for improving the microbial fermentation of gaseous substrates to produce one or more products. The invention relates to the capture of one or more components of a gaseous stream in a liquid. The invention relates to the deoxygenation of a liquid by contacting the liquid with a gaseous stream. The invention relates to methods of increasing efficiency of fermentation by using gas streams exiting a bioreactor to deoxygenate liquid streams entering a bioreactor.

Claims (35)

28 . A method for improving the efficiency of an anaerobic fermentation, the method comprising;

a) fermenting at least one gaseous substrate in a bioreactor comprising at least one microorganism to produce at least one product and a gaseous exit stream;

b) passing the gaseous exit stream from the bioreactor to a deoxygenating zone comprising a liquid media;

c) contacting the liquid media with the gaseous exit stream in the deoxygenating zone operated at deoxygenating conditions such that at least one component of the gaseous exit stream is captured in the liquid media to provide a substantially deoxygenated liquid media; and

d) passing the substantially deoxygenated liquid media to the bioreactor.

29 . The method of claim 28 wherein the deoxygenating zone comprises a gas/liquid contacting means.

30 . The method of claim 28 wherein the at least one gaseous substrate comprises CO.

31 . The method of claim 28 wherein one of the components of the gaseous exit stream is ethanol and wherein at least a portion of the ethanol in the gaseous exit stream is captured in the deoxygenated liquid media.

32 . The method of claim 28 wherein one of the components of the gaseous exit stream is H 2 S, and wherein at least a portion of the H 2 S is captured in the deoxygenated liquid media.

33 . The method of claim 28 wherein the at least one product comprises acids, alcohols and mixtures thereof.

34 . The method of claim 33 wherein the acid is acetate and the alcohol is ethanol.

35 . A method for improving the efficiency of an anaerobic fermentation, the method comprising;

a) fermenting in a bioreactor comprising at least one microorganism a gaseous substrate comprising CO to produce at least one liquid product and a gaseous exit stream comprising ethanol;

b) passing the gaseous exit stream to a deoxygenating zone containing a liquid nutrient;

c) contacting the gaseous exit stream with the liquid nutrient to capture at least a portion of the ethanol component into the liquid nutrient and provide a deoxygenated liquid media ; and

d) passing the deoxygenated liquid media to the bioreactor.

36 . The method of claim 35 wherein the gaseous substrate is derived from an industrial waste gas.

37 . The method of claim 35 wherein the deoxygenating zone comprises a gas/liquid contacting means.

38 . The method of claim 37 where the gas/liquid contacting means comprises a packing material.

39 . A system for deoxygenating a liquid, the deoxygenating system comprising;

a. a vessel configured for gas/liquid contact;

b. a first inlet configured to receive a liquid;

c. a first outlet configured to pass at least a portion of the liquid from the vessel to a bioreactor;

d. a second inlet configured to receive a gaseous stream; and

e. a second outlet configured to pass at least a portion of the gaseous stream away from the vessel.

40 . The system of claim 39 wherein the gaseous stream is a product of a fermentation reaction in a bioreactor.

41 . The system of claim 39 wherein the liquid and the gas flow through the vessel in a counter-current direction.

42 . The system of claim 39 wherein the vessel comprises a gas/liquid contacting means, the gas/liquid contacting means being configured to increase the gas/liquid contact surface area.

43 . The system according to claim 42 wherein the gas/liquid contacting means is a packing material.

44 . A system for deoxygenating a liquid media comprising:

a) a first conduit for passing a gaseous stream from a first gas outlet of a bioreactor to a first gas inlet of a deoxygenating vessel configured for gas/liquid contact;

b) a first liquid inlet on said deoxygenating vessel to introduce a liquid media stream into the vessel and contacting the liquid media stream with the gaseous stream and provide a deoxygenated liquid media stream;

c) a second conduit to pass at least a portion of the deoxygenated liquid media stream from a liquid outlet on said deoxygenating vessel to a liquid inlet on the bioreactor; and

d) a gas outlet on said deoxygenating vessel to pass at least a portion of the gaseous stream away from the vessel.
