Thermal solution for prismatic lithium ion battery pack
View Patent ↗A lithium ion battery pack includes a plurality of prismatic lithium polymer cells and one or more graphite heat spreaders. Each spreader has at least two major surfaces and is made of one of a sheet of a compressed mass of exfoliated graphite particles, a graphitized polyimide sheet, or combinations thereof.
1. A thermal management assembly for a battery pack having opposed major surfaces, the thermal management assembly comprising:
a flexible graphite heat spreader having two opposed major surface feces and an in-plane thermal conductivity of at least 300 W/m−K;
a first conduit through which a fluid flows; and
wherein at least one of said two opposed major surface faces of said flexible graphite heat spreader contacts at least a portion of one of the opposed major surfaces' of a battery cell of said battery pack and the flexible graphite heat spreader having a center segment comprising a curved portion, the curved portion having an inner radius matching an outer radius of a portion of the outer surface of the first conduit, the curved portion contacts the portion of the outer surface of the first conduit, at least one of said two opposed major surface faces of said flexible graphite heat spreader contacts both said opposed major surfaces of said battery cell.
2. The thermal management assembly of claim 1 wherein said flexible graphite heat spreader having a U-shape.
3. The thermal management assembly of claim 1 wherein said battery cell comprises a prismatic battery.
4. The thermal management assembly of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of battery cells in a stacked configuration and said flexible graphite heat spreader contacting at least one of said major surfaces of at least two battery cells.

The thermal management assembly of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of battery cells arranged in a stacked configuration and a second conduit, wherein said flexible graphite heat spreader contacts at least one major surface of at least two battery cells and further contacts at least a portion of the second conduit.
6. The thermal management assembly of claim 1 wherein the flexible graphite heat spreader comprises a sheet of compressed particles of exfoliated graphite.
7. The thermal management assembly of claim 1 wherein the flexible graphite heat spreader comprises a sheet of graphitized polyimide.
