Abstract

Disclosed is a composition comprising 55 to 65% by weight of water, 20 to 25% by weight of a combination of octisalate, avobenzone, homosalate, oxybenzone, and octocrylene, and 3 to 6% by weight of a combination of polyvinylpyrrolidon/eicosene copolymer and hydroxyethyl acrylate/sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer/squalane/polysorbate 60, wherein the water is included in the continuous phase of the emulsion, and wherein the emulsion has a sun protection factor of at least 30 or from about 30 to 40.

Claims (43)

1. A substantive emulsion comprising:

(a) 55 to 65% by weight of water;

(b) 20 to 25% by weight of a combination of octisalate, avobenzone, homosalate, oxybenzone, and octocrylene;

(c) 3 to 6% by weight of a combination of polyvinylpyrrolidon/eicosene copolymer and hydroxyethyl acrylate/sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer/squalane/polysorbate 60,

(d) 1% by weight 1,2-hexanediol/caprylyl glycol/tropolone; and

(e) 2% by weight of glyceryl stearate/PEG-100 stearate;

wherein the emulsion has a sun protection factor of at least 30, and

wherein the emulsion is substantive and very water resistant.

2. The substantive emulsion of claim 1 , wherein the emulsion comprises:

(a) 57 to 60% by weight of water;

(b) 20 to 21% by weight of the combination of octisalate, avobenzone, homosalate, oxybenzone, and octocrylene; and

(c) 3 to 5% by weight of the combination of polyvinylpyrrolidon/eicosene copolymer and hydroxyethyl acrylate/sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer/squalane/polysorbate 60.

3. The substantive emulsion of claim 2 , wherein the emulsion comprises 55 to 60% by weight of water.

4. The substantive emulsion of claim 3 , wherein the emulsion comprises:

4.5% by weight of octisalate;

3% by weight of avobenzone;

5% by weight of homosalate;

4% by weight of oxybenzone; and

5% by weight of octocrylene.

5. The substantive emulsion of claim 4 , wherein the emulsion comprises:

2% by weight of polyvinylpyrrolidon/eicosene copolymer; and

1 to 2.5% by weight of hydroxyethyl acrylate/sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer/squalane/polysorbate 60.

6. The substantive emulsion of claim 5 , wherein the emulsion does not include any additional UV absorbing ingredients.

7. The substantive emulsion of claim 5 , wherein the emulsion does not include para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), PABA esters, butyl PABA, ethyl PABA, ethyl dihydroxypropyl PABA, sulisobenzone, cinnamates, cinnamate esters, salicylates, anthranilates, ethyl urocanate, styrene/acrylates copolymer, kaolin, talc, petrolatum and/or metal oxides.

8. The substantive emulsion of claim 7 , further comprising:

C12-15 Alcohol Benzoate;

Glycerin

Dicapryl Carbonate;

Silica;

and

Caprylyl Methicone.

9. The substantive emulsion of claim 8 , comprising:

2% by weight of Glycerin;

3% by weight of Dicapryl Carbonate;

1.3% by weight of Silica;

and

1.5%% by weight of Caprylyl Methicone.

10. The substantive emulsion of claim 9 , wherein the composition is oil-free or substantially oil-free.

11. The substantive emulsion of claim 1 , wherein the sun protection factor is between 30 and 40.

12. A method for protecting skin from ultraviolet radiation comprising applying the substantive emulsion of claim 1 to skin in need thereof.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the substantive emulsion is applied to facial skin.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the substantive emulsion is applied to skin on a user's arms or hands.
