TEMPORARY CATHETER FOR BIOPSY SITE TISSUE FIXATION
Devices and methods are provided for temporarily maintaining access to a body cavity in a targeted tissue region within a patient's body. A catheter for temporarily at least partially filing a body cavity in a targeted tissue region within a patient's body includes a shaft having a distal end, a proximal end, and a cavity filling member on a distal shaft section configured to at least partially fill the body cavity. A proximal shaft section is configured to be folded so as to be subcutaneously deployed within the patient when the cavity filling member is disposed within the body cavity so as to prevent intrusion of bacteria. An anti-bacterial material is applied to or incorporated within a surface of the shaft and the cavity filling member so as to prevent bacteria growth.
1 . A catheter for temporarily at least partially filling a body cavity in a targeted tissue region within a patient's body comprising:
a. a shaft having a distal end, a proximal end, and a cavity filling member on a distal shaft section configured to at least partially fill the body cavity;
b. a proximal shaft section configured to be folded so as to be subcutaneously deployed within the patient when the cavity filling member is disposed within the body cavity so as to prevent intrusion of bacteria; and
c. an anti-bacterial material applied to or incorporated within a surface of the shaft and the cavity filling member so as to prevent bacteria growth.
2 . The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the cavity filling member is an inflatable balloon.
3 . The catheter of claim 2 , comprising an inflation lumen that extends along the catheter shaft between the proximal end and the inflatable balloon and configured to direct inflation fluid to the interior of the balloon.
4 . The catheter of claim 1 , comprising at least one vacuum lumen that extends along the catheter shaft to a vacuum port proximal or distal to the cavity filling member.
5 . The catheter of claim 1 wherein the proximal shaft section is formed of a compliant or semi-compliant polymeric material.
6 . The catheter of claim 1 wherein the balloon is formed of compliant or semi-compliant polymeric material.
7 - 35 . (canceled)
36 . A catheter assembly for temporarily maintaining the shape of a cavity in a targeted tissue region within a patient's body, comprising:
an elongated shaft having a distal shaft section, a proximal shaft section configured to allow deployment of the proximal shaft within a patient's body, a vacuum lumen and an inflation lumen extending therein;
an inflatable balloon on the distal shaft section having an interior chamber in fluid communication with the inflation lumen;
one or more ports in a distal shaft section which are in fluid communication with the vacuum lumen; and
an anti-bacterial material on a surface of at least one of the elongated shaft and the inflatable balloon.
37 . The catheter assembly of claim 36 , wherein the anti-bacterial material is at least one of applied to and incorporated within the surface of the elongated shaft and the inflated balloon so as to prevent bacteria growth.
38 . The catheter assembly of claim 36 , wherein the elongated shaft has a port to provided fluid communication between the inflation lumen and the interior of the balloon.
39 . The catheter assembly of claim 36 , wherein the vacuum lumen is configured to be connected to a vacuum source.
40 . The catheter assembly of claim 36 , wherein the proximal shaft section is formed of a compliant or semi-compliant polymeric material which allows the proximal shaft section to be folded or coiled for intracorporeal deployment.
41 . A catheter for temporarily at least partially filling a body cavity in a targeted tissue region within a patient's body comprising:
a shaft having a distal end, a proximal end, and a distal shaft section;
an inflatable balloon on the distal shaft section that is configured to at least partially fill the body cavity; and
an anti-bacterial material on a surface of the balloon.
42 . The catheter of claim 41 , comprising an inflation lumen that extends along the shaft between the proximal end and the balloon and is configured to direct inflation fluid to the interior of the balloon.
43 . The catheter of claim 42 , comprising:
at least one proximal shaft section configured to be detachable from the shaft when the balloon is disposed within the body cavity; and
at least one one-way valve to prevent loss of inflation fluid when the proximal shaft section is detached from the shaft.
44 . The catheter of claim 41 , comprising at least one vacuum lumen that extends along the shaft to a vacuum port proximal or distal to the balloon.
45 . The catheter of claim 44 , comprising a one-way valve deployed within the at least one vacuum lumen configured to minimize or prevent loss of vacuum within the body cavity through the at least one vacuum lumen.
