Abstract

Methods and systems for a handheld portable communication device for configuring connection to and use of local and remote resources are disclosed and may include discovering available networks and resources, establishing a route between the handheld wireless communication device and a selected one or more of the available resources via a selected one or more of the available networks based on user preference criteria stored in the handheld wireless communication device, and communicating multimedia data between the handheld wireless communication device and the selected one or more of the available resources via the established route. The established route may be dynamically adjusted, based on network availability and bandwidth. The handheld wireless communication device may communicate utilizing a plurality of wireless protocols. The preference criteria stored in the handheld wireless communication device may be dynamically adjusted. The resources may be local or remote to the handheld wireless communication device.

Claims (29)

1. A method for data communication, the method comprising:

in a handheld wireless communication device, discovering available networks and resources available via said available networks;

establishing a route between said handheld wireless communication device and a selected one or more of said available resources via a selected one or more of said available networks based on user preference criteria stored in said handheld wireless communication device and based on a required format of data to be transmitted through the route for reproduction; and

transmitting the data via said established route such that the data is transcoded into the required format and reproduced by at least one of the available resources other than the handheld wireless communication device.

2. The method according to claim 1 , comprising dynamically adjusting said established route.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein said dynamically adjusting is done based on variation in availability of said available networks.

4. The method according to claim 2 , wherein said dynamically adjusting is done based on a bandwidth of said available networks.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said handheld wireless communication device communicates utilizing a plurality of wireless protocols.

6. The method according to claim 1 , comprising dynamically adjusting said preference criteria stored in said handheld wireless communication device.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of said resources is connected to an area network that is local to said handheld wireless communication device.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of said resources is connected to an area network that is remote to said handheld wireless communication device.

9. A system for data communication, the system comprising:

one or more circuits in a handheld wireless communication device that discover available networks and resources available via said available networks;

said one or more circuits establish a route between said handheld wireless communication device and a selected one or more of said available resources via a selected one or more of said available networks based on user preference criteria stored in said handheld wireless communication device and based on a required format of data to be transmitted through the route for reproduction; and

said one or more circuits transmit the data via said established route such that the data is transcoded into the required format and reproduced by at least one of the available resources other than the handheld wireless communication device.

10. The system according to claim 9 , wherein said one or more circuits enable dynamically adjusting said established route.

11. The system according to claim 10 , wherein said dynamic adjustment is done based on variation in availability of said available networks.

12. The system according to claim 10 , wherein said dynamic adjustment is done based on a bandwidth of said available networks.

13. The system according to claim 9 , wherein said one or more circuits enable communication via said handheld wireless communication device utilizing a plurality of wireless protocols.

14. The system according to claim 9 , wherein said one or more circuits enable dynamic adjustment of said preference criteria stored in said handheld wireless communication device.

15. The system according to claim 9 , wherein at least one of said resources is connected to an area network that is local to said handheld wireless communication device.

16. The system according to claim 9 , wherein at least one of said resources is connected to an area network that is remote to said handheld wireless communication device.

17. A non-transitory machine-readable storage having stored thereon, a computer program having at least one code section for data communication, the at least one code section being executable by a machine for causing the machine to perform steps comprising:

in a handheld wireless communication device, discovering available networks and resources available via said discovered available networks;

establishing a route between said handheld wireless communication device and a selected one or more of said available resources via a selected one or more of said available networks based on user preference criteria stored in said handheld wireless communication device and based on a required format of data to be transmitted through the route for reproduction; and

transmitting the data via said established route such that the data is transcoded into the required format and reproduced by at least one of the available resources other than the handheld wireless communication device.

18. The machine readable storage according to claim 17 , wherein said at least one code section comprises code for dynamically adjusting said established route.

19. The machine readable storage according to claim 18 , wherein said dynamic adjustment is done based on variation in availability of said available networks.

20. The machine readable storage according to claim 18 , wherein said dynamic adjustment is done based on a bandwidth of said available networks.
