Abstract

A method and system for conducting an online payment transaction through a point of sale device. The method includes receiving input from a user selecting an item for purchase through the point of sale device; calculating a total purchase amount for the item in response to a request from the user to purchase the item; and sending payment authorization for the total purchase amount from the point of sale device to a payment entity, in which the payment authorization is sent to the payment entity via a mobile communication device of the user. The method further includes receiving a result of the payment authorization from the payment entity through the mobile communication device; and completing the payment transaction based on the result of the payment authorization.

Claims (26)

1 . A mobile payment system comprising:

a mobile payment system input interface configured to receive a digital artifact from a management server through a first communication channel, wherein the digital artifact corresponds to an item selected for purchase by a user of the mobile payment system through a point of sale (POS) terminal, wherein the POS terminal generates a near field communication (NFC) trigger interaction with a secure element coupled to a mobile device associated with the mobile payment system, wherein a secure element processor executes an NFC application maintained in secure element memory in response to the NFC trigger interaction;

a mobile payment system output interface configured to display the digital artifact through a mobile device display included in the mobile device; and

a mobile payment system storage interface configured to maintain the digital artifact by using a mobile device memory included in the mobile device.

2 . The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the POS terminal is a desktop computer, a laptop computer, or a thin client, and wherein the POS terminal includes an NFC chip configured as an NFC scanner and an NFC reader.

3 . The mobile device of claim 1 , further comprising automatically applying a coupon during the near field communication transaction.

4 . The mobile device of claim 1 , further comprising automatically applying a default payment method during the near field communication transaction.

5 . The mobile device of claim 3 , wherein a receipt, ticket, or coupon is sent to the mobile device after the transaction.

6 . The mobile device of claim 5 , wherein the item is included in a virtual shopping list received at the mobile device through a near field communication interaction.

7 . The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the secure element is physically coupled to the mobile device but electrically decoupled from electrical interior components of the mobile device.

8 . The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the secure element is physically coupled to the mobile device and electrically coupled to electrical interior components of the mobile device.

9 . The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the secure element is included within the body of a memory card configured for placement in a memory card slot in the mobile device.

10 . The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the secure element is embedded within the body of the mobile device.

The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein a security tool is implemented at the mobile payment system, and wherein implementation of the security tool comprises prompting the user to login to the mobile device, using biometrics to authenticate the user before authorizing a transaction, disabling use of the mobile payment system, prompting the user to enter a payment limit PIN in response to a pending purchase exceeding a predetermined amount, temporarily disabling the secure element, permanently disabling the secure element, deleting all cached data stored in the mobile device memory, and/or storing encrypted security codes on the mobile device, wherein disabling the secure element prevents near field communication payments, coupon redemption, and ticket redemption.

12 . A method comprising:

receiving a digital artifact from a management server through a first communication channel, wherein the digital artifact corresponds to an item selected for purchase by a user of the mobile payment system through a point of sale (POS) terminal, wherein the POS terminal generates a near field communication (NFC) trigger interaction with a secure element coupled to a mobile device associated with the mobile payment system, wherein a secure element processor executes an NFC application maintained in secure element memory in response to the NFC trigger interaction;

presenting the digital artifact through a mobile device display included in the mobile device; and

maintaining the digital artifact by using a mobile device memory included in the mobile device.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the POS terminal is a desktop computer, a laptop computer, or a thin client, and wherein the POS terminal includes an NFC chip configured as an NFC scanner and an NFC reader.

14 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising automatically applying a coupon during the near field communication transaction.

15 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising automatically applying a default payment method during the near field communication transaction.

16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein a receipt, ticket, or coupon is sent to the mobile device after the transaction.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the item is included in a virtual shopping list received at the mobile device through a near field communication interaction.

18 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the secure element is physically coupled to the mobile device but electrically decoupled from electrical interior components of the mobile device.

19 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the secure element is physically coupled to the mobile device and electrically coupled to electrical interior components of the mobile device.

20 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the secure element is included within the body of a memory card configured for placement in a memory card slot in the mobile device.
