Methods for Improving Cognitive Function and Decreasing Heart Rate
The present invention is directed to methods of improving cognitive function in subjects having age related cognitive decline or mild cognitive impairment and to methods of decreasing heart rate in a subject by administering dosage forms comprising docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) substantially free of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).
. A method of treating age related cognitive decline (ARCD) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI), comprising administering to a subject in need thereof about 0.8 g to about 4 g of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) per day in a dosage form substantially free of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and substantially free of arachidonic acid (ARA).
- 7 . (canceled)
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the DHA is derived from an algal source.
- 11 . (canceled)
. The method of claim 1 , wherein about 0.84 g to about 1.0 g of DHA is administered per day to the subject.
. (canceled)
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the DHA is administered in at least one unit dose.
- 16 . (canceled)
. The method of claim 14 , wherein the DHA in the unit dose is about 30% to about 99.5% (w/w) of the total fatty acid content of the unit dose.
- 19 . (canceled)
. The method of claim 14 , wherein the DHA in the unit dose comprises 35% to 96% (w/w) of the total weight of the unit dose.
- 40 . (canceled)
. The method of claim 14 , wherein the unit dose comprises about 860 mg to about 950 mg of DHA ethyl ester.
- 47 . (canceled)
. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dosage form is an oral unit dose.
- 54 . (canceled)
. A method of reducing heart rate, comprising administering docosahexaenoic acid to a subject in need thereof about 0.8 g to about 4 g of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) per day in a dosage form substantially free of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and substantially free of arachidonic acid (ARA).
. The method of claim 55 , wherein about 0.9 g to about 3.6 g of DHA is administered to the subject per day.
. (canceled)
. The method of claim 55 , wherein about 0.84 g to about 1.0 g of DHA is administered to the subject per day.
. (canceled)
. The method of claim 55 , wherein the DHA is administered in at least one unit dose.
. The method of claim 60 , wherein the unit dose comprises about 0.2 g to about 1 g of DHA.
. (canceled)
. The method of claim 60 , wherein the unit dose comprises a DHA ester.
. (canceled)
. The method of claim 63 , wherein the DHA ester is a DHA methyl ester, ethyl ester, propyl ester, or combinations thereof.
. (canceled)
. The method of claim 65 , wherein the unit dose comprises about 860 mg to about 950 mg of the DHA ethyl ester.
. (canceled)
. The method of claim 55 , wherein the heart rate is reduced about 1 beat per minute to about 10 beats per minute.
. The method of claim 55 , wherein the heart rate is reduced about 2 beats per minute to about 4 beats per minute.
. (canceled)
. The method of claim 60 , wherein the unit dose comprises a DHA triglyceride.
. The method of claim 55 , wherein the subject:
a) has mild cognitive impairment or age related cognitive decline;
b) has a family history of dementia; or
c) is being concomitantly treated with a statin.
