Abstract

A system and method utilizes strategies, priority rules, specifications, and comparisons to calculate the fewest number of cuts to separate individual instances from an imaged media sheet. Embodiments of the systems and methods may produce an optimal or more efficient arrangement of the media instances on an imaged media to minimize a total number of cuts to separate the instances, and thus reduce an overall cost.

Claims (26)

1. A computer-implemented method for determining a number of printing cuts necessary to separate media instances that are arranged in a print layout having fixed dimensions, the method comprising:

identifying a particular media instance to be printed on a media sheet;

determining a cutting relationship between the particular media instance and each of a plurality of neighboring media instances to be printed on the media sheet, wherein determining the cutting relationship includes:

determining a cut type for each edge of the particular media instance,

wherein the cut type is selected from a single cut, a double cut, a combination of at least one single cut and at least one double cut, or no cut if no neighboring media instances exist along the edge being considered;

evaluating a relative width of the particular media instance and a relative width of each of the plurality of neighboring media instances;

determining a cut alignment;

prioritizing the plurality of neighboring media instances based on a set of priorities that evaluates the relative widths of each of the plurality of neighboring media instances, said prioritizing allowing the plurality of neighboring media instances to be combined into strips in an optimized order;

determining a minimal number of cuts required to separate the plurality of neighboring media instances from the particular media instance and from one another; and

based upon said determination, joining the plurality of neighboring media instances into strips to eliminate gaps between at least some of the neighboring media instances and to minimize a total number of cuts required to separate the plurality of neighboring media instances from the particular media instance and from one another;

forming a finalized print layout that includes the particular media instance and the strips of neighboring media instances;

printing all media instances on the media sheet in accordance with the finalized print layout; and

cutting the plurality of neighboring media instances apart from the particular media instance and from one another based on the cutting relationship between the particular media instance and each of the plurality of neighboring media instances.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

prioritizing the plurality of neighboring media instances based on another set of priorities that evaluates whether wider neighbors are separable by a single cut or a double cut.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein prioritizing the plurality of neighboring media instances based on the set of priorities includes considering the set of priorities according to a pre-determined hierarchical order.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein evaluating the relative width of each of the plurality of neighboring media instances includes expanding a width of at least one neighboring media instance.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein joining the plurality of neighboring media instances into the strips includes aligning at least two strips along a common edge, and wherein each of the at least two strips includes at least one neighboring media instance.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said evaluating the relative width of the particular media instance and the relative width of each of the plurality of neighboring media instances comprises:

if a particular edge of a media instance under consideration has any neighboring media instances, comparing a width of a union of all media instances neighboring the particular edge to an extension of the width of the particular edge.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

checking for double cut situations;

responsive to identifying a double cut situation that involves the particular media instance and a neighboring media instance,

determining whether a double cut edge of the neighboring media instance is aligned with another media instance in the print layout; and

responsive to determining the double cut edge is not aligned,

aligning the double cut edge of the neighboring media instance with an edge of the other media instance.
