Atherectomy devices and methods
The devices and methods generally relate to treatment of occluded body lumens. In particular, the present devices and method relate to removal of the occluding material from the blood vessels as well as other body lumens.
1. A device for removing material from a body lumen, the device comprising:
a catheter having a distal portion, a proximal portion stiffer than the distal portion, and a catheter lumen extending therethrough;
a cutter assembly located on the distal portion of the catheter, the cutter assembly comprising a housing comprising a closed distal end and a plurality of openings, and a cutter configured to rotate within the housing, the cutter comprising a plurality of cutting edges aligned with the plurality of openings to expose a length of the cutting edges that is the same throughout a 360 degree rotation of the cutter;
a torque shaft extending through the catheter lumen and attached to the cutter assembly for rotating a cutter of the cutter assembly;
a sweep sheath comprising a curved distal portion that is stiffer than the distal portion of the catheter and less stiff than the proximal portion of the catheter, configured to slide relative to the catheter from a first position in which the proximal portion of the catheter straightens the curved distal portion of the sweep sheath to a second position in which the curved distal portion of the sweep sheath deflects the distal portion of the catheter; and
a sweep control actuator connected to the sweep sheath and configured to rotate and slide axially independently relative to the torque shaft, such that rotation of the sweep control actuator relative to the catheter rotates the sweep sheath and axial sliding relative to the catheter slides the sweep sheath.
2. The device of claim 1 further comprising a lumen extending through the torque shaft and the cutter accommodating passage of a guide wire.
3. The device of claim 1 wherein the each of the plurality of cutting edges comprises a cutting flute.
4. The device of claim 3 where an edge of each of the cutting flutes is helical.
5. The device of claim 1 wherein the torque shaft has at least one helical conveyor member wound about an exterior such that rotation of the torque shaft conveys material across a length of the torque shaft.
6. The device of claim 1 further comprising a guide wire.
7. The device of claim 1 further comprising a burr rotatably located on a tip of the cutter assembly.
