Abstract

Medical devices having a wettable, biocompatible surface are described herein. Processes for producing such devices are also described.

Claims (26)

1. A contact lens comprising a silicon-containing polymer substrate having a surface and a polymeric surface modification on the substrate surface, wherein the polymeric surface modification extends a maximum penetration depth of 45% of the thickness of the lens below the surface of the lens in a direction normal to the surface of the lens, the advancing contact angle of the polymeric surface modification is less than about 30 degrees and the polymer substrate and polymeric surface modification have an oxygen permeability of greater than about 50 barrers.

2. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface modification has a maximum penetration depth of no more than 2% of the thickness of the lens extending from the surface of the lens in a direction normal to the surface of the lens.

3. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the advancing contact angle is less than about 25 degrees.

4. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the oxygen permeability is greater than about 75 barrers.

5. The contact lens of any claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface modification comprises a zwitterionic polymer.

6. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface modification comprises a polymer containing sulfobetaine or carboxybetaine repeat units and the polymer containing the sulfobetaine or carboxybetaine repeat units is grafted from a silicone hydrogel material.

7. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface modification has a static contact angle of less than 25 degrees.

8. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface modification has a coefficient of friction of less than about 0.1.

9. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface modification has a static contact angle of less than 30 degrees and an oxygen permeability of greater than 80 barrers.

10. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface modification has an advancing contact angle of less than 30 degrees and an oxygen permeability of greater than 80 barrers.

11. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface modification has a coefficient of friction of less than 0.1 and an oxygen permeability of greater than 80 barrers.

12. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the contact lens exhibits a tear-film break up time in use of greater than 10 seconds.

13. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface modification has an advancing contact angle of less than about 30 degrees and the contact lens exhibits a tear film break-up time in use of greater than 10 seconds.

14. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface modification material is a zwitterionic polymer, the coefficient of friction is less than 0.1, and the contact lens exhibits a tear film break-up time in use of greater than 10 seconds.

15. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface modification material is a zwitterionic polymer, the advancing contact angle is less than 30 degrees, the coefficient of friction is less than 0.1, and the contact lens exhibits a tear-film break-up time in use of greater than 10 seconds.

16. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the silicon-containing polymer contains at least 1 wt. % silicon.

17. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymer of the polymeric surface modification comprises a carboxyammonium polymer or a sulfoammonium polymer.

18. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymer of the polymeric surface modification comprises a carboxybetaine polymer or a sulfobetaine polymer.

19. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymer of the polymeric surface modification comprises repeat units corresponding to Formula 3:

wherein X 44 comprises an oxylated alkylene moiety, a zwitterionic moiety, an anionic moiety, or a cationic moiety.

20. The contact lens of claim 19 wherein X 44 is —O(CH 2 ) 2 N + (CH 3 ) 2 (CH 2 ) n SO 3 − , —O(CH 2 ) 2 N + (CH 3 ) 2 (CH 2 ) n CO 2 − , —NH(CH 2 ) 3 N + (CH 3 ) 2 (CH 2 ) n CO 2 − , or —NH(CH 2 ) 3 N + (CH 3 ) 2 (CH 2 ) n SO 3 − , wherein n is 1-8.

The contact lens of claim 19 wherein X 44 is —NH(CH 2 ) m N(CH 2 ) n CH 3 (CH 2 ) p SO 3 , —NH(CH 2 ) m N(CH 2 ) n CH 3 (CH 2 ) p CO 2 , —NH(CH 2 ) m N + [(CH 2 ) n CH 3 ] 2 (CH 2 ) p SO 3 , —NH(CH 2 )N + [(CH 2 ) n CH 3 ] 2 (CH 2 ) p CO 2 , —NH(CH 2 ) m Ncyclo-(CH 2 ) p CO 2 , or —NH(CH 2 ) m Ncyclo-(CH 2 ) p SO 3 , Ncyclo- is a heterocyclic structure or a heterocyclic derivative containing at least one nitrogen atom, m is 1-8; n is 0-5; and p is 1-8.

22. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymer of the polymeric surface modification extends into the substrate at a penetration depth of greater than about 0.1 microns and less than about 100 microns.

23. The contact lens according to claim 1 wherein the minimum weight percentage of the polymeric surface modification is at least 0.1% of the total weight of the contact lens.

24. The contact lens of claim 2 wherein the polymeric surface modification has a minimum penetration depth of at least 0.1% of the thickness of the lens below the surface of the lens in a direction normal to the surface of the lens.

25. The contact lens of claim 1 wherein the polymeric surface modification extends at least a minimum penetration depth of 0.1% of the thickness of the lens below the surface of the lens in a direction normal to the surface of the lens.
