Abstract

A replaceable unit for an electrophotographic image forming device according to one example embodiment includes a housing having an inner volume forming a reservoir for storing toner. A rotatable shaft is positioned within the reservoir. A paddle is mounted on the shaft and rotatable independent of the shaft. A driving member is rotatable with the shaft and positioned to push the paddle when the shaft rotates. The paddle is free to fall ahead of the driving member. The paddle includes a magnetic element rotatable with the paddle and detectable by a magnetic sensor when the replaceable unit is installed in the image forming device for detecting the motion of the paddle.

Claims (37)

1. A replaceable unit for an electrophotographic image forming device, comprising:

a housing having an inner volume forming a reservoir for storing toner;

a rotatable shaft positioned within the reservoir;

a paddle mounted on the shaft and rotatable independent of the shaft;

a driving member on the shaft and fixed to rotate with the shaft, the driving member positioned to push the paddle when the shaft rotates, the paddle being free to fall ahead of the driving member; and

a magnetic sensor mounted on the housing outside of the reservoir,

wherein the paddle includes a magnetic element rotatable with the paddle and the magnetic element having a magnetic field detectable by the magnetic sensor when the replaceable unit is installed in the image forming device for detecting the motion of the paddle.

2. The replaceable unit of claim 1 , wherein the paddle is axially positioned on the shaft next to an end wall of the housing.

3. The replaceable unit of claim 2 , wherein the magnetic sensor is mounted on an exterior portion of the end wall.

4. The replaceable unit of claim 3 , wherein the magnetic element is positioned near an axial end of the paddle adjacent the end wall.

5. The replaceable unit of claim 1 , wherein the magnetic sensor is positioned to sense the magnetic element near a lowest center of gravity of the paddle when the replaceable unit is in an installed position in the image forming device.

6. The replaceable unit of claim 1 , wherein the magnetic element is positioned substantially angularly in line with a center of gravity of the paddle with respect to an axis of rotation of the shaft.

7. The replaceable unit of claim 1 , wherein the magnetic element is held in a cavity in the paddle.

8. The replaceable unit of claim 1 , wherein the paddle has a flat, planar front surface positioned to lead when the paddle is pushed by the driving member.

9. The replaceable unit of claim 1 , further comprising at least one weight positioned on the paddle that affects the motion of the paddle when the paddle falls ahead of the driving member.

10. A replaceable unit for an electrophotographic image forming device, comprising:

a housing having an inner volume forming a reservoir for storing toner;

a rotatable shaft positioned within the reservoir and spanning a length of the reservoir, the shaft having an agitator extending therefrom that is fixed to rotate with the shaft for agitating toner within the reservoir;

a paddle mounted on the shaft and free to rotate independent of the shaft, the agitator being positioned to push the paddle when the shaft rotates, the paddle being free to separate from the agitator;

a magnetic sensor mounted on an exterior portion of the housing; and

a magnetic element connected to the paddle to rotate with the paddle and the magnetic element having a magnetic field detectable by the magnetic sensor when the replaceable unit is installed in the image forming device for detecting the motion of the paddle.

11. The replaceable unit of claim 10 , wherein the paddle is axially positioned on the shaft next to an end wall of the housing.

12. The replaceable unit of claim 11 , wherein the magnetic sensor is mounted on an exterior portion of the end wall.

13. The replaceable unit of claim 12 , wherein the magnetic element is positioned near an axial end of the paddle adjacent the end wall.

14. The replaceable unit of claim 10 , wherein the magnetic sensor is positioned to sense the magnetic element near a lowest center of gravity of the paddle when the replaceable unit is in an installed position in the image forming device.

15. The replaceable unit of claim 10 , wherein the magnetic element is positioned substantially angularly in line with a center of gravity of the paddle with respect to an axis of rotation of the shaft.

16. The replaceable unit of claim 10 , wherein the magnetic element is held in a cavity in the paddle.

17. The replaceable unit of claim 11 , wherein the paddle has a flat, planar front surface positioned to lead when the paddle is pushed by the agitator.

18. The replaceable unit of claim 10 , further comprising at least one weight positioned on the paddle that affects the motion of the paddle when the paddle falls ahead of the agitator.

19. A replaceable unit for an electrophotographic image forming device, comprising:

a housing having an inner volume forming a reservoir for storing toner and an outlet port for exiting toner from the replaceable unit, the outlet port including an opening into the reservoir for transferring toner out of the reservoir;

a rotatable shaft positioned within the reservoir;

a paddle mounted on the shaft and rotatable independent of the shaft, the paddle being positioned to rotate past the opening into the reservoir,

a driving member on the shaft and fixed to rotate with the shaft, the driving member positioned to push the paddle when the shaft rotates, the paddle being free to fall ahead of the driving member; and

a magnetic sensor mounted on an exterior portion of the housing,

wherein the paddle includes a magnetic element having a magnetic field detectable by the magnetic sensor for detecting the motion of the paddle and the magnetic sensor is positioned to sense the magnetic element at a point where the paddle oscillates when the toner level in the reservoir is low when the replaceable unit is in an installed position in the image forming device.

20. The replaceable unit of claim 19 , wherein the paddle is axially positioned on the shaft next to an end wall of the housing and the magnetic sensor is mounted on an exterior portion of the end wall.
