Abstract

A communications system is to communicate with an application server storing a plurality of applications. The communications system includes a mobile wireless communications device configured to store at least one application from among the plurality of applications, the at least one application having stored version information associated therewith. An intermediate server is configured to update the mobile wireless communications device by at least obtaining respective current version information for associated current versions of the plurality of applications and obtaining the stored application version information from the mobile wireless communications device for the at least one stored application. The stored application version information is compared with the current version information for the at least one stored application. New application portions are downloaded from a current application associated with the current version information, and the new application portions are sent to the mobile wireless communications device.

Claims (41)

1. A server remote from a mobile wireless communications device including a stored application with associated stored version information, the server comprising:

a processor and a memory coupled thereto and configured to

obtain the stored version information from the mobile wireless communications device for the stored application,

compare the stored version information with available different version information for the stored application, and

send different application portions to the mobile wireless communications device based on the available different version information.

2. The server of claim 1 , wherein said processor and memory are configured to send the different application portions to the mobile wireless communications device without a request therefrom.

3. The server of claim 1 , wherein said processor and memory are configured to send a notification to the mobile wireless communications device of availability of different application portions based upon at least one selection preference.

4. The server of claim 3 , wherein said processor and memory are configured to send the notification without a request from the mobile wireless communications device.

5. The server of claim 3 , wherein the at least one selection preference comprises at least one of an application type and an application name.

6. A communications system comprising:

a mobile wireless communications device including a stored application with associated stored version information; and

a server, remote from said mobile wireless communications device, comprising a processor and a memory coupled thereto and configured to

obtain the stored version information from the mobile wireless communications device for the stored application,

compare the stored version information with available different version information for the stored application, and

send different application portions to the mobile wireless communications device based on the available different version information.

7. The communications system of claim 6 , wherein said processor and memory are configured to send different application portions to said mobile wireless communications device without a request therefrom.

8. The communications system of claim 6 , wherein said processor and memory are configured to send a notification to said mobile wireless communications device of availability of different application portions based upon at least one selection preference.

9. The communications system of claim 8 , wherein said processor and memory are configured to send the notification without a request from said mobile wireless communications device.

10. The communications system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one selection preference comprises at least one of an application type and an application name.

11. The communications system of claim 6 , wherein said mobile wireless communications device installs the different application portions without user input.

12. The communications system of claim 6 , wherein said mobile wireless communications device installs the different application portions based upon user input.

13. A method of using a server remote from a mobile wireless communications device including a stored application with associated stored version information, the server comprising a processor and a memory coupled thereto, the method comprising:

operating the processor and memory coupled thereto so as to

obtain the stored version information from the mobile wireless communications device for the stored application,

compare the stored version information with available different version information for the stored application, and

send different application portions to the mobile wireless communications device based on the available different version information.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising operating the processor and memory coupled thereto to send the different application portions without a request from the mobile wireless communications device.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising operating the processor and memory coupled thereto to send a notification to the mobile wireless communications device of availability of different application portions based upon at least one selection preference.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising operating the processor and memory coupled thereto to send the notification without a request from the mobile wireless communications device.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the at least one selection preference comprises at least one of an application type and an application name.

18. A mobile wireless communications device for communications with a communications system including an application server storing a plurality of applications, the mobile wireless communications device comprising:

a memory configured to store at least one application from among the plurality of applications, the at least one application having stored version information associated therewith;

a wireless transceiver; and

a processor cooperating with said memory and said wireless transceiver and configured to

selectively permit an intermediate server to obtain the stored version information, and, when permitted

send the stored application version information for the at least one stored application to the intermediate server based upon a request therefrom, and

receive new application portions of a current application associated with the current version information from the intermediate server.

19. The mobile wireless communications device of claim 18 , wherein said processor installs the new application portions without user input.

20. The mobile wireless communications device of claim 18 , wherein said processor installs the new application portions based upon user input.

21. The mobile wireless communications device of claim 18 , wherein said processor is configured to receive a notification of availability of different application portions based upon at least one selection preference.

22. The mobile wireless communications device of claim 21 , wherein the at least one selection preference comprises at least one of an application type and an application name.
