Abstract

Displaying a map on a wireless communications device includes downloading map data from which the map is to be rendered, rendering portions of the map for which the map data has been fully downloaded, and then graphically overlaying on a portion of the map for which the map data has not yet been fully downloaded a graphical indication, such as hatching, crosshatching or shading, to indicate that further map data is being downloaded. This hatching, crosshatching, shading, or writing informs the user that further map data is being downloaded and that not all of the map features have been rendered yet.

Claims (39)

1. A map-displaying method performed by a wireless communications device, the method comprising:

downloading a first set of individually downloadable map layers for one or more maplets that are downloaded from a map database storing map data as a grid of maplets, wherein a maplet includes a set of map layers each comprising a set of map data, and wherein the first set of map layers is a subset of available map layers for the one or more maplets;

rendering the first set of map layers by assembling the map layers at the wireless communications device to display a map comprising an incompletely rendered portion;

graphically overlaying a partially transparent graphical indication over the incompletely rendered portion of the map, wherein the partially transparent graphical indication enables underlying features and labels of the incompletely rendered portion to be viewed through the partially transparent graphical indication;

downloading a second set of individually downloadable map layers for the incompletely rendered portion subsequent to downloading the first set of map layers, rendering the first set of map layers and graphically overlaying the partially transparent graphical indication;

rendering the second set of map layers to, in combination with the rendered first set of map layers, reduce a size of the incompletely rendered portion, leaving a residual incompletely rendered portion of the map; and

graphically removing some of the partially transparent graphical indication so that the partially transparent graphical indication covers the residual incompletely rendered portion of the map.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein graphically overlaying comprises determining attributes of map features rendered in the incompletely rendered portion of the map and varying the graphical indication to avoid obscuring the map features.

3. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein graphically overlaying comprises:

determining angles of features and labels rendered in the incompletely rendered portion of the map; and

varying the angle of hatch marks or crosshatching that are used as the graphical indication, wherein the varying is based on the angles of the features and labels to avoid obscuring the features and labels.

4. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein graphically overlaying comprises:

determining a shading or color of a map feature rendered in the incompletely rendered portion of the map; and

varying the shading or color of the partially transparent graphical indication in the incompletely rendered portion of the map to avoid obscuring the map feature.

5. The method as claimed in claim 1 further comprising removing the graphical indication when all map layers have been rendered.

6. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions in code which when loaded into a memory of a wireless communications device and executed by a processor of the wireless communications device cause the wireless communications device to:

download a first set of individually downloadable map layers for one or more maplets that are downloaded from a map database storing map data as a grid of maplets, wherein a maplet includes a set of map layers each comprising a set of map data, and wherein the first set of map layers is a subset of available map layers for the one or more maplets;

render the first set of map layers by assembling the map layers at the wireless communications device to display a map comprising an incompletely rendered portion;

graphically overlay a partially transparent graphical indication over the incompletely rendered portion of the map, wherein the partially transparent graphical indication enables underlying features and labels of the incompletely rendered portion to be viewed through the partially transparent graphical indication;

download a second set of individually downloadable map layers for the incompletely rendered portion subsequent to downloading the first set of map layers, rendering the first set of map layers and graphically overlaying the partially transparent graphical indication;

render the second set of map layers to, in combination with the rendered first set of map layers, reduce a size of the incompletely rendered portion, leaving a residual incompletely rendered portion of the map; and

graphically remove some of the partially transparent graphical indication so that the partially transparent graphical indication covers the residual incompletely rendered portion of the map.

7. The computer-readable medium as claimed in claim 6 wherein the code for graphically overlaying comprises code for determining attributes of map features rendered in the incompletely rendered portion of the map and varying the graphical indication to avoid obscuring the map features.

8. The computer-readable medium as claimed in claim 6 wherein the code for graphically overlaying comprises:

code for determining angles of features and labels rendered in the incompletely rendered portion of the map; and

code for varying the angle of hatch marks or crosshatching that are used as the graphical indication, wherein the varying is based on the angles of the features and labels to avoid obscuring the features and labels.

9. The computer-readable medium as claimed in claim 6 wherein the code for graphically overlaying comprises:

code for determining a shading or color of a map feature rendered in the incompletely rendered portion of the map; and

code for varying the shading or color of the partially transparent graphical indication in the incompletely rendered portion of the map to avoid obscuring the map feature.

10. The computer-readable medium as claimed in claim 6 further comprising code for removing the graphical indication when all map layers have been rendered.

11. A wireless communications device for displaying a map, the wireless communications device comprising:

a processor coupled to a memory for interacting with a radiofrequency transceiver to download a first set of individually downloadable map layers for one or more maplets that are downloaded from a map database storing map data as a grid of maplets, wherein a maplet includes a set of map layers each comprising a set of map data, and wherein the first set of map layers is a subset of available map layers for the one or more maplets;

the processor being coupled to a display to render the first set of map layers by assembling the map layers at the wireless communications device to display a map comprising an incompletely rendered portion and to graphically overlay a partially transparent graphical indication over the incompletely rendered portion of the map, wherein the partially transparent graphical indication enables underlying features and labels of the incompletely rendered portion to be viewed through the partially transparent graphical indication;

the processor being configured to interact with the transceiver to download a second set of individually downloadable map layers for the incompletely rendered portion subsequent to downloading the first set of map layers, rendering the first set of map layers and graphically overlaying the partially transparent graphical indication; and

the processor being configured to interact with the display to render the second set of map layers to, in combination with the rendered first set of map layers, reduce a size of the incompletely rendered portion, leaving a residual incompletely rendered portion of the map and graphically remove some of the partially transparent graphical indication so that the partially transparent graphical indication covers the residual incompletely rendered portion of the map.

12. The wireless communications device as claimed in claim 11 wherein the processor is configured to determine attributes of map features rendered in the incompletely rendered portion of the map and vary the graphical indication to avoid obscuring the map features.

The wireless communications device as claimed in claim 11 wherein the processor is configured to determine angles of features and labels rendered in the incompletely rendered portion of the map and to vary the angle of hatch marks or crosshatching that are used as the graphical indication based on the angles of the features and labels to avoid obscuring the features and labels.

The wireless communications device as claimed in claim 11 wherein the processor is configured to determine a shading or color of a map feature rendered in the incompletely rendered portion of the map and to vary the shading or color of the partially transparent graphical indication in the incompletely rendered portion of the map to avoid obscuring the map feature.

15. The wireless communications device as claimed in claim 11 wherein the processor interacts with the display to remove the graphical indication when all map layers have been rendered.
