Abstract

A management controller of a computing device is identified, the first management controller implemented in hardware of the first computing device and independent of a central processing unit (CPU) of the computing device. The management controller is queried for attributes of the computing device. Data is received from the management controller identifying one or more attributes of the computing device and a device drive is identified for the computing device. Communication is facilitated with the computing device using the device driver. In some instances, an inter-device operation is identified involving the computing device and at least one other computing device. The exchange of messages in the operation can be facilitated, for instance, by translating a message from the computing device for use by the other computing device involved in the operation.

Claims (61)

1 . A method comprising:

identifying a first management controller of a first computing device, the first management controller implemented in hardware of the first computing device and independent of a central processing unit (CPU) of the first computing device;

querying the first management controller for attributes of the first computing device;

receiving, from the first management controller, data identifying one or more attributes of the first computing device;

identifying a first device driver for the first computing device; and

communicating with the first computing device using the first device driver.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first computing device is a smart appliance.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the device driver includes:

identifying a source of the device driver based on the data identifying attributes of the computing device; and

obtaining the device driver from the identified source.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a second management controller of a second computing device, the second management controller implemented in hardware of the second computing device and independent of a central processing unit (CPU) of the second computing device;

querying the second management controller for attributes of the second computing device;

receiving, from the second management controller, data identifying one or more attributes of the second computing device;

identifying a second device driver for the second computing device; and

communicating with the second computing device using the second device driver.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the second computing device is of a type different from the first computing device.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a remote server hosting data describing additional attribute information of the first computing device based on the received data identifying attributes of the first computing device; and

querying the remote server for at least a portion of the hosted data.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the attributes include a model identifier of the first computing device.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the attributes include a manufacturer of the first computing device.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the attributes include hardware attributes of the first computing device.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the attributes include software attributes of the first computing device.

11 . At least one machine accessible storage medium having instructions stored thereon, the instructions when executed on a machine, cause the machine to:

identify a first management controller of a first computing device, the first management controller implemented in hardware of the first computing device and independent of a CPU of the first computing device;

query the first management controller for attributes of the first computing device;

receive, from the first management controller, data identifying one or more attributes of the first computing device;

identify a first device driver for the first computing device; and

communicate with the first computing device using the first device driver.

12 . The storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the instructions when executed further cause the machine to authenticate the first computing device based on an identifier derived from secure data embedded in hardware of the first computing device.

13 . The storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the secure data is stored in secure memory of the first management controller.

14 . The storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the instructions when executed further cause the machine to send authentication data to the first management controller to mutually authenticate at the first management controller.

15 . The storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the identifier is unique to a pairing of the first computing device and a particular domain.

16 . The storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the first computing device and a second computing device are in a particular domain and the instructions when executed further cause the machine to:

identify an inter-device operation involving at least the first computing device and a second computing device;

receive a first message from the first computing device in connection with the operation;

translate the first message for use by the second computing device in the operation to generate a first translated message; and

send the first translated message to the second computing device.

17 . The storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the first message is translated according to a device driver of the second computing device.

18 . The storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the instructions when executed further cause the machine to:

receive a second message from the second computing device;

translate the second message for use by the first computing device in an operation involving the first and second computing devices, wherein translating the second message generates a second translated message; and

send the second translated message to the first computing device.

19 . The storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the operation is a pre-defined operation.

20 . The storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the operation is at least partially user-defined.

21 . The storage medium of claim 20 , wherein the operation is identified from a set of pre-defined operations based at least in part on the one or more attributes of the first computing device.

22 . A system comprising:

at least one processor device;

at least one memory element; and

a management system adapted when executed by the at least one processor device to:

identify a management controller of a computing device, the management controller implemented in hardware of the computing device and independent of a CPU of the computing device;

query the management controller for attributes of the computing device;

receive, from the management controller, data identifying one or more attributes of the computing device;

identify a device driver for the computing device; and

communicate with the computing device using the device driver.

23 . The system of claim 22 , wherein the management system is further adapted to:

identify an inter-device operation involving at least the first computing device and a second computing device;

receive a first message from the first computing device in connection with the operation;

translate the first message for use by the second computing device in the operation to generate a first translated message; and

send the first translated message to the second computing device.
