Abstract

Apparatus and methods for treatment of an internal cavity are provided. The internal cavity is coated with a treatment solution. The treatment solution can include a solidifiable matrix with or without a drug or combination of drugs incorporated therein, or a drug solution without a solidifiable matrix. The treatment solution is coated onto at least a portion of the internal cavity, and acts as a slow-release drug delivery system.

Claims (13)

1. A system adapted to deliver a hydrogel based biocompatible matrix to an internal cavity and to treat said internal cavity by coating preselected areas in the surface of said internal cavity with said hydrogel based biocompatible matrix, the system comprising:

a. a delivery device comprising a body having a proximal end and a distal end;

b. at least one balloon positioned on said distal end of said body; wherein said balloon is characterized by an outer surface; and

c. at least one external channel on said outer surface of said balloon;

wherein said external channel is movable with respect to said balloon;

wherein said at least one external channel is adapted to at least partially accommodate at least a portion of said hydrogel based biocompatible matrix, such that application of predetermined amount of pressure on the same results in the release of at least a portion of said hydrogel based biocompatible matrix from said at least one external channel onto said preselected areas such that when said balloon is inflated, the same coats said preselected areas in said surface with hydrogel based biocompatible matrix.

2. The system of claim 1 , additionally comprising a stabilizing mechanism adapted to solidify at least a portion of said hydrogel based biocompatible matrix, such that said cured hydrogel based biocompatible matrix is configured to form a substantially rigid material when cured within a said internal body cavity.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein said stabilizing mechanism is adapted to actively cure at least a portion of said hydrogel based biocompatible matrix by use of at least one curing element selected from the group consisting of light, pressure, heat, a curing agent, and any combination thereof.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of said at least one external channel is directed into a different section of said outer surface of said balloon.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein said predetermined amount of pressure applied to said at least one external channel is controllable from outside the body, either by manual means or via a strain release mechanism.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein said outer surface of said balloon comprises at least one groove formed in a predetermined configuration upon said outer surface of said balloon, adapted to house said at least one external channel, such that said delivery of said hydrogel based biocompatible matrix is mapped out.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein said at least one groove is formed in a shape selected from a group consisting of zigzag, straight line or any combination thereof.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein said predetermined amount of pressure applied to said at least one external channel is provided when said balloon is inflated.
