Abstract

A co-extrusion print head capable of extruding at least two layers vertically in a single pass having a first inlet port connected to a first manifold, a first series of channels connected to the first inlet port arranged to receive a first fluid from the first inlet port, a second inlet port connected to one of either a second manifold or the first manifold, a second series of channels connected to the second inlet port arranged to receive a second fluid from the second inlet port, a merge portion of the print head connected to the first and second series of channels, the merge portion arranged to receive the first and second fluids, and an outlet port connected to the merge portion, the outlet port arranged to deposit the first and second fluids from the merge portion as a vertical stack on a substrate.

Claims (23)

1. A co-extrusion print head capable of extruding at least two layers vertically in a single pass, comprising:

a first inlet port in the print head connected to a first manifold, wherein the print head comprises a set of plates stacked together;

a first series of channels in the print head connected to the first manifold arranged to receive a first fluid from the first manifold;

a second inlet port in the print head connected to one of either a second manifold or the first manifold;

a second series of channels in the print head connected to the second manifold arranged to receive a second fluid from the second manifold;

a third inlet port in the print head arranged to receive a third fluid;

a third set of channels in the print head to receive the third fluid;

a first merge portion of the print head connected to the first and third series of channels, the first merge portion arranged to receive the first and third fluids and combine them into an interdigitated layer;

a second merge portion of the print head connected to the first merge portion and second series of channels, the second merge portion arranged to receive the interdigitated layer and second fluid such that the interdigitated layer and the second fluid materials are flowed together vertically inside the print head;

and

an outlet port in the print head connected to the merge portion, the outlet port arranged to deposit at least the first and second fluids from the merge portion as a vertical stack on a substrate.

2. The co-extrusion print head of claim 1 , wherein the first and second fluids are the same fluid.

3. The co-extrusion print head of claim 1 , wherein the first and second fluids are different fluids.

4. The co-extrusion print head of claim 3 , wherein the first fluid is an electrode fluid and the second fluid is a separator fluid.

5. The co-extrusion print head of claim 1 , wherein the first inlet port and the second inlet port reside on opposite sides of the merge portions.

6. The co-extrusion print head of claim 1 , wherein the print head comprises a set of plates stacked together, wherein the first and second inlet ports reside on different plates.

7. The co-extrusion print head of claim 6 , wherein the set of plates are bound by a top plate on one side and a fixture plate on a side of the set opposite the one side.

8. The co-extrusion print head of claim 7 , wherein the plates between the top plate and the fixture plate are one of plastic or metal.

9. The co-extrusion print head of claim 6 , wherein the set of plates includes a first set of sheets arranged to distribute materials for a cathode.

10. The co-extrusion print head of claim 6 , wherein the set of plates includes a second set of sheets arranged to distribute materials for a separator.

11. The co-extrusion print head of claim 6 , further comprising a third inlet port wherein the set of plates includes a third set of sheets arranged to distribute materials for an anode.

12. The co-extrusion print head of claim 1 , further comprising a fourth inlet port to receive a fourth fluid connected to the merge portions.

13. The co-extrusion print head of claim 11 , wherein the first and second sets of channels are arranged to merge the first and second fluids horizontally, and the third and fourth sets of channels are arranged to merge the third and fourth fluids vertically with the horizontally merged first and second fluids.
