Retractable room actuation assembly for recreational vehicle
View Patent ↗A slide-out or retractable room for a mobile living quarters, such as a recreational vehicle, is provided with actuating assemblies mounted on opposite side walls of the slide-out room and the adjacent wall of the main living area. The actuating assemblies include a pair of parallel gear racks mounted on the side wall, which are engaged by pinions rotated by torque shafts mounted on the main living quarters. Each torque shaft is rotated by a separate motor. A roller engages a bearing surface on the lower portion of the gear racks. Accordingly, the slide-out room is extended and retracted by rotating the torque shafts to cause the gear racks and the attached slide-out room to extend and retract. The weight of the slide-out room is supported by the rollers, thereby supporting the slide-out room off of the floor of the main living quarters as it extends and retracts. A synchronizing control operates the motors.
1. An actuating assembly operable to extend and retract a retractable room between extended and retracted positions relative to an aperture, said actuating assembly comprising:
an engagement member mounted on a sidewall of said retractable room and movable with said retractable room between the extended and retracted positions;
a drive member, said drive member having engagement features engaging said engagement member to move said retractable room between the retracted and extended positions; and
a retention member, said retention member connecting to said engagement member and maintaining engagement between said drive member and said engagement member regardless of changes in spacing between said retractable room and said aperture.
2. The actuating assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said retention member projects from a bearing block and maintains said engagement member within said drive member to maintain engagement of said drive member with said engagement member.
3. The actuating assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said engagement member includes a plurality of slots and said drive member includes engagement features to mesh with said plurality of slots to move said compartment relative to said aperture.
4. The actuating assembly as claimed in claim 2 , wherein said retention member extends over said engagement member.
5. The actuation assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein said retention member includes low friction plastic.
6. The actuation assembly as claimed in claim 1 , further including at least one roller to support said compartment.
7. The actuation assembly as claimed in claim 6 , wherein said roller engages said engagement member.
8. The actuation assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said drive member includes a pinion rotatable by a motor.
9. The actuation assembly as claimed in claim 8 , wherein said engagement member comprises a rack having a plurality of slots for meshing with said pinion.
