Abstract

Systems and methods performed by an IP telephony device or an element of an IP telephony system mask the data contained in data packets bearing the media of an IP telephony communication to prevent an Internet service provider from identifying the data packets as carrying the media of an IP telephony communication. The systems and methods can also modify the size of data packets and/or modify the data transfer rate of a stream of data packets bearing the media of an IP telephony communication to prevent an Internet service provider from identifying the stream of data packets as bearing the media of an IP telephony communication.

Claims (41)

1 . A method of modifying data contained in one or more data packets bearing the media of an IP telephony communication, comprising:

receiving a data packet bearing the media of an IP telephony communication, the data packet conforming to a standard used for IP telephony communications; and

modifying the data packet in such a manner that the modified data packet does not resemble data packets that conform to the standard used for IP telephony communications.

2 . The method of claim 22 , further comprising receiving the key during setup of the telephony communication.

3 . The method of claim 22 , further comprising negotiating the key during setup of the telephony communication, wherein the negotiation is performed with at least one of an IP telephony device and an element of an IP telephony system.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the data packet comprises re-ordering data in the data packet.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the data packet comprises changing a start position of data in the data packet.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the data packet comprises inserting random data into the data packet.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the data packet comprises changing a value of one or more bits of data.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying the data packet comprises modifying a header of the data packet.

9 . A system for modifying data contained in one or more data packets bearing the media of an IP telephony communication, comprising:

means for receiving a data packet bearing the media of an IP telephony communication, the data packet conforming to a standard used for IP telephony communications; and

means for modifying the data packet based in such a manner that the modified data packet does not resemble data packets that conform to the standard used for IP telephony communications.

10 . A system for modifying data contained in one or more data packets bearing the media of an IP telephony communication, comprising:

a transmission and receiving unit that receives a data packet bearing the media of an IP telephony communication, the data packet conforming to a standard used for IP telephony communications; and

a processor configured to modify the data packet in such a manner that the modified data packet does not resemble data packets that conform to the standard used for IP telephony communications.

11 . The system of claim 24 , wherein the processor is further configured to negotiate the key during setup of the telephony communication, wherein the negotiation is performed with at least one of an IP telephony device and an element of an IP telephony system.

12 . A method of correcting data in a modified data packet that contains the media of an IP telephony communication, comprising:

receiving a modified data packet containing the media of an IP telephony communication, wherein the data packet has been modified in such a manner that the modified data packet does not resemble a data packet that conforms to a standard used for IP telephony communications; and

correcting the modified data packet to produce a corrected data packet that conforms to the standard used for IP telephony communications.

13 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising receiving the key during setup of the telephony communication.

14 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising negotiating the key during setup of the telephony communication, wherein the negotiation is performed with at least one of an IP telephony device and an element of an IP telephony system.

15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein correcting the data packet comprises re-ordering data in the data packet.

16 . The method of claim 12 , wherein correcting the data packet comprises changing a start position of data in the data packet.

17 . The method of claim 13 , wherein correcting the data packet comprises removing random data that has been inserted into the data packet from the data packet.

18 . The method of claim 13 , wherein correcting the data packet comprises changing a value of one or more bits of the data.

19 . A system for correcting data in a modified data packet that contains the media of an IP telephony communication, comprising:

means for receiving a modified data packet containing the media of an IP telephony communication, wherein the data packet has been modified in such a manner that the modified data packet does not resemble a data packet that conforms to a standard used for IP telephony communications; and

means for correcting the modified data packet to produce a corrected data packet that conforms to the standard used for IP telephony communications.

20 . A system for correcting a modified data packet that contains the media of an IP telephony communication, comprising:

a transmission and receiving unit that receives a modified data packet containing the media of an IP telephony communication, wherein the data packet has been modified in such a manner that the modified data packet does not resemble a data packet that conforms to a standard used for IP telephony communications; and

a processor configured to correct the modified data packet to produce a corrected data packet that conforms to the standard used for IP telephony communications.

21 . The system of claim 28 , wherein the processor is further configured to negotiate the key during setup of the telephony communication, wherein the negotiation is performed with at least one of an IP telephony device and an element of an IP telephony system.

22 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising modifying the data packet based on a key which has been established for the IP telephony communication.

23 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising modifying the data packet by modifying a transfer rate of a stream of data packets so that it does not conform to a standard data rate used for the IP telephony communications.

24 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to modify the data packet based on a key which has been established for the IP telephony communication.

25 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to modify the data packet by modifying a transfer rate of a stream of data packets so that it does not conform to a standard data rate used for the IP telephony communications.

26 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the data packet has been modified based on a key established for the IP telephony communication; and further comprising correcting the modified data packet based on the key to produce the corrected data packet.

27 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the data packet has been modified by modifying a transfer rate of a stream of data packets so that the data packet does not conform to a standard data rate used for the IP telephony communications, and wherein correcting the modified data packet produces a corrected data packet conforms to a standard data rate used for the IP telephony communications.

28 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the data packet has been modified based on a key established for the IP telephony communication, and wherein the processor is further configured to correct the modified data packet based on the key to produce the corrected data packet.
