Abstract

A system and method for determining media to be exported out of a media library is described. In some examples, the system determines a media component to be exported, determines the media component is in the media library for a specific process, and exports the media component after the process is completed.

Claims (51)

1. A system of maintaining contents of a media library associated with a data restoration system for a computing system, the system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory having a data structure and having instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the system to execute:

a resource information component, wherein the resource information component monitors performance of resources of the computing system and provides information related to the performance of the resources;

a provisioning component, wherein the provisioning component predicts possible future failure or unavailability of one or more of the resources based at least in part on the information provided by the resource information component,

wherein the provisioning component determines which of multiple, physical media components to store within the media library, based at least in part on the predicted possible failure of the one or more of the resources; and

a movement component, wherein the movement component imports a first set of media components into the media library and exports a second set of media components out of the media library based at least in part on instructions received from the provisioning component,

wherein the movement component determines a threshold time period to maintain the imported first set of media components at the media library,

wherein the threshold time is determined based at least in part on the predicted possible failure of the one or more of the resources,

wherein the movement component exports the imported first set of media components after a current time exceeds the threshold time period.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the movement component updates a data structure with information about the predicted possible failure,

wherein the data structure contains a listing of the first set of media components imported into the media library,

wherein the data structure contains a time of the predicted possible failure,

wherein movement component includes an alert in the data structure that is associated with the time of the predicted possible failure and includes the alert until the time of the predicted possible failure has passed.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the movement component updates a data structure with information about the predicted possible failure,

wherein the data structure contains a time of the predicted possible failure,

wherein movement component includes an alert in the data structure that is associated with the time of the predicted possible failure.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the resource information component monitors performance of the resources of the computing system via analysis of log entries of past performance of the resources.

5. A method of maintaining contents of a media library associated with a data restoration system for a computing system, comprising:

monitoring performance of resources of the computing system;

providing information related to the performance of the resources, based on the monitoring of the performance;

predicting possible future failure of one or more of the resources based at least in part on the provided information related to the performance of the resources;

determining which ones of the media components to store within the media library, based at least in part on the predicted possible failure of the one or more of the resources;

importing the ones of the media components into the media library based on the determining,

wherein importing includes determining a threshold time period to maintain the imported ones of the media components at the media library,

wherein the threshold time is determined based at least in part on the predicted possible failure of the one or more of the resources; and

exporting the ones of the media components out of the media library if a current time exceeds the threshold time period.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein exporting the ones of the media components out of the media library includes exporting the ones of the media components if a current time exceeds the threshold time period, the method further comprising:

maintaining a data structure with a listing of the ones of the media components imported into the media library,

wherein the data structure contains a time of the predicted possible failure;

inserting an alert in the data structure that is associated with the time of the predicted possible failure; and

deleting the alert from the data structure if the time of the predicted possible failure has passed.

7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

maintaining a data structure with a listing of the ones of the media components imported into the media library,

wherein the data structure contains a time of the predicted possible failure;

inserting an alert in the data structure that is associated with the time of the predicted possible failure; and

deleting the alert from the data structure if the time of the predicted possible failure has passed.

8. A system of maintaining contents of a media library associated with a data restoration system for a computing system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory having a data structure and having instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the system to execute:

a resource information component that monitors performance of resources of the computing system and inserts information related to the performance of the resources into the data structure,

wherein the data structure includes one or more entries,

wherein each of the entries comprise information identifying one of the resources of the computing system,

wherein each of the entries comprise information identifying a media component that contains data usable for restoring one or more of the resources;

a provisioning component, wherein the provisioning component predicts possible future failure of one or more of the resources based at least in part on the information provided by the resource information component,

wherein the provisioning component inserts a time entry into the data structure for each predicted possible future failure of the one or more resources,

wherein the data structure includes action entries identifying an action be performed in order to transfer the media component to the media library associated with the computing system during the predicted time; and

a movement component, wherein the movement component imports the ones of the media components into the media library based on the action entries in the data structure, and exports the ones of the media components out of the media library based at least in part on instructions received from the provisioning component.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein movement component inserts an alert in the data structure that is associated with the time of the predicted possible failure and maintains the alert until the time of the predicted possible failure has passed.

10. The system of claim 8 wherein the resource information component monitors performance of the resources of the computing system via analysis of log entries of past performance of the resources,

wherein the log entries are stored in the data structure.
