Abstract

Navigating on a display includes tracking motion of an input tool on a display, comparing a motion of the input tool to a threshold, and changing a position of the visible portion of a page of information on the display if the input tool motion exceeds the threshold. The position of the visible portion of the page of information on the display is constrained if the motion does not exceed the threshold.

Claims (56)

1. A method comprising:

receiving data representative of content to be displayed on a touchscreen display, wherein the content comprises a plurality of portions;

displaying, on the touchscreen display, a first portion of the plurality of portions;

detecting, using at least one processor, a motion of an object on or near the touchscreen display;

shifting, due to the detected motion, a viewable portion of the content from the first portion towards a second portion from the plurality of portions;

determining whether the detected motion has met a predetermined threshold;

in response to a determination that the detected motion has met the predetermined threshold, positioning the viewable portion of the content to the second portion; and

in response to determination that the detected motion has not met the predetermined threshold, returning the viewable portion of the content to the first portion.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the object comprises a finger.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the detected motion comprises a touch and drag motion.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined threshold comprises a snap threshold.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined threshold comprises a user-defined threshold.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising animating the positioning of the viewable portion to give the appearance of motion.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein positioning the viewable portion of the content to the second portion comprises automatically centering the viewable portion with respect to the second portion.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting the motion comprises tracking a distance of the motion.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting the motion comprises detecting a vertical component of the motion and a horizontal component of the motion.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein determining whether the detected motion has met the predetermined threshold comprises determining whether at least one of the vertical component or the horizontal component has met the predetermined threshold.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein determining whether the detected motion has met the predetermined threshold comprises determining whether the horizontal component has met the predetermined threshold.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising, in response to the determination that the detected motion has not met the predetermined threshold, shifting the viewable portion within the first portion.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein shifting the viewable portion within the first portion comprises shifting the viewable portion in a vertical direction in accordance with the vertical component of the detected motion.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the touchscreen display is implemented within a mobile device.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content comprises a webpage and the plurality of portions comprise a plurality of columns of text.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

positioning the viewable portion of the content to the second portion occurs after the detected motion is finished; and

returning the viewable portion of the content to the first portion occurs after the detected motion is finished.

17. A method comprising:

receiving data representative of content to be displayed on a touchscreen display wherein the content comprises a plurality of portions;

displaying, on the touchscreen display, a first view of the content, wherein the first view includes a first portion of the plurality of portions;

detecting, using at least one processor, a motion of an object on or near the touchscreen display;

in response to the detected motion and simultaneously with the detected motion, shifting a viewable portion of the content from the first view towards a second view, wherein the second view includes a second portion of the plurality of portions;

determining whether the detected motion has met a predetermined threshold;

in response to a determination that the detected motion has met the predetermined threshold, changing the viewable portion of the content to the second view; and

in response to a determination that the detected motion has not met the predetermined threshold, returning the viewable portion of the content to the first view.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein returning the viewable portion to the first view comprises automatically centering the viewable portion with respect to the first portion.

19. The method of claim 17 , further comprising animating the shifting of the viewable portion from the first view towards the second view to create an appearance of motion.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein changing the viewable portion of the content to the second view comprises automatically centering the viewable portion with respect to the second portion.

21. The method of claim 17 , wherein determining whether the detected motion has met the predetermined threshold comprises determining whether at least one of a vertical component of the motion or a horizontal component of the motion has met the predetermined threshold.

22. The method of claim 17 , wherein the touchscreen display is implemented within a mobile device.

23. A device comprising:

a touchscreen display;

at least one processor; and

at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by the at least on processor, cause the device to:

receive data representative of content to be displayed on a touchscreen display wherein the content comprises a plurality of portions;

display, on the touchscreen display, a first view of the content, wherein the first view includes a first portion of the plurality of portions;

detect a motion of an object on or near the touchscreen display;

in response to the detected motion and simultaneously with the detected motion, shift a viewable portion of the content from the first view towards a second view, wherein the second view includes a second portion of the plurality of portions;

determine whether the detected motion has met a predetermined threshold;

in response to a determination that the detected motion has met the predetermined threshold, change the viewable portion of the content to the second view; and

in response to a determination that the detected motion has not met the predetermined threshold, return the viewable portion of the content to the first view.

24. The device of claim 23 , wherein returning the viewable portion to the first view comprises automatically centering the viewable portion with respect to the first portion.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein changing the viewable portion of the content to the second view comprises automatically centering the viewable portion with respect to the second portion.

26. The device of claim 23 , wherein the at least one processor is further programmed to animate the change of the viewable portion from the first view towards the second view to create an appearance of motion.

27. The method of claim 23 , wherein detecting the motion comprises tracking a distance and a direction of the motion.

28. The method of claim 27 , wherein detecting the motion comprises detecting a vertical component of the motion and a horizontal component of the motion.

29. The method of claim 28 , wherein determining whether the detected motion has met the predetermined threshold comprises determining whether at least one of the vertical component or the horizontal component has met the predetermined threshold.

30. The device of claim 23 , wherein the device is a mobile device.
