Abstract

An enteral pump system for delivering medical fluids unidirectionally includes a disposable fluid delivery set having a repeatable compression portion and an enteral feeding pump. The repeatable compression portion is helically coiled around a central axis to define a cylindrical shape. The compression portion is configured to pump a large volume of medical fluids per stroke. The compressing portion includes at least two adjacent tubing walls joined around the central axis for repeatable compression. The enteral feeding pump is configured to repeatedly and reliably compress the compression portion of the fluid delivery set along the central axis. In operation, the compression portion is repeatably compressed without distortion along the central axis by the enteral feeding pump to flow unidirectionally through the fluid delivery set.

Claims (28)

1. An enteral pump system, comprising:

a disposable fluid delivery set including:

a disposable tubing used for medical purposes having a source end connected to a fluid source, the disposable tubing including a repeatable compression portion, and

an enteral feeding pump, including:

a housing;

a pump motor unit disposed within the housing configured for pumping medical fluids; and

a controller for directing the operation of the pump motor unit, the controller having opposing plates to provide selective oscillatory motion along a central axis to compress the repeatable compression portion of the disposable tubing set, said controller in electrical communication with said pump motor unit.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising: a capture mechanism to define a cylindrical shape retaining the repeatable compression portion therein, wherein the repeatable compression portion is coiled around the central axis.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the capture mechanism includes a reeling mechanism and a capture mechanism housing, the reeling mechanism is mounted within the capture mechanism housing for rotation about the central axis and connected to the disposable tubing so that rotation of the reeling mechanism forms the repeatable compression portion in situ.

4. The system of claim 3 , the reeling mechanism configured to provide the repeatable compression portion by helically coiling the portion of the tubing set about the central axis.

5. The system of claim 3 , wherein the opposing plates are operationally connected to said pump motor unit, and the opposing plates are disposed within the housing.

6. The system of claim 3 , wherein the reeling mechanism has one or more apertures within an outer area for receipt of the portion of the tubing set.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein an inner area of the reeling mechanism defines a channel for receipt of the portion of the tubing set to secure the tubing set within the capture mechanism.

8. A method for flowing fluid, comprising:

providing a fluid delivery set having a source end and a patient end with a repeatable compression portion intermediate the ends, the fluid delivery set comprising a disposable tubing set made of low-grade PVC tubing throughout its length;

providing an enteral feeding pump for regulating the flow of fluid into and out of the fluid delivery set;

compressing said repeatable compression portion made of low-grade PVC tubing of said fluid delivery set using the enteral feeding pump;

selectively closing a first means for regulating the flow of medical fluid out of the compression portion;

selectively opening a second means upstream of the repeatable compression portion for regulating the flow of medical fluid into the compression portion from the source end, wherein in a rebound position, the first means is closed and the second means is open; and

releasing the compression portion in the rebound position to allow medical fluids to be drawn into the fluid delivery set from a source.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

inserting a tube section of the tubing set within a capture mechanism to provide a helically coiled repeatable compression section of the tubing set.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

compressing the compressing portion using the enteral feeding pump to move medical fluids through the means for regulating the flow of medical fluid out of the compression portion.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising: reeling in the tube section within the capture mechanism around a central axis to provide a helically coiled repeatable compression section of the tubing set within the capture mechanism.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein in a delivery position, the first means is open and the second means is closed; and

further comprising the step of compressing the compression portion in the delivery position to egress the medical fluids toward a patient.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first means and the second means are opposing pinching members through which the disposable tubing set passes.
