Abstract

Using methods, computer-readable storage media, and apparatuses for computer-implemented processing, a passage of text may be variably rendered. For each glyph in the passage of text, a glyph representation is varied according to a geometric transformation that was determined from statistical measurements of at least one geometric property from an ensemble of representations of the current glyph. Each varied glyph representation is included in renderable output data, such that when the passage of text is rendered to an output device, a given rendered representation of a given glyph subtly differs from other rendered representations of the given glyph.

Claims (56)

1. A computer-implemented method for variably rendering a passage of text, the method comprising:

for each glyph of a plurality of glyphs of the passage of text:

obtaining, by the computer, a glyph representation corresponding to a current glyph, said glyph representation comprising a set of two dimensional coordinates; and

varying, by the computer, said set of two dimensional coordinates according to a geometric transformation to obtain a varied glyph representation, said geometric transformation having been determined from statistical measurements of at least one geometric property from an ensemble of representations of said current glyph; and

generating, by the computer, renderable output data comprising each varied glyph representation, such that when the passage of text is rendered to an output device, a given rendered representation of a given glyph subtly differs from other rendered representations of said given glyph according to said at least one geometric property.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein varying said set of two dimensional coordinates according to said geometric transformation comprises:

determining at least one geometric variation function; and

transforming said set of two dimensional coordinates according to said at least one geometric variation function to obtain a variant glyph representation of said current glyph that differs from said glyph representation according to said at least one geometric property.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

obtaining at least one image of handwritten text; and

identifying a plurality of glyph representations of each glyph, as depicted in said at least one image of handwritten text.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein identifying said plurality of glyph representations comprises:

segmenting said at least one image of handwritten text into at least one disjoint component image corresponding to a plurality of individual glyphs connected by a plurality of ligatures;

sectioning said at least one disjoint component image into a plurality of non-overlapping segments; and

determining a set of one or more adjacent non-overlapping segments corresponding to each of said plurality of individual glyphs.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein said at least one geometric variation function is determined based at least in part on said plurality of glyph representations.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein identifying said plurality of glyph representations comprises selecting said glyph representation from among said plurality of glyph representations.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing said renderable output data to said output device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said at least one geometric property comprises a geometric property selected from a group consisting of:

a glyph position-above-a-baseline property;

a glyph size property; and

a glyph orientation property.

9. A computing apparatus comprising a processor and a memory having stored thereon instructions that when executed by the processor, configure the apparatus to perform a method for variably rendering a passage of text, the method comprising:

for each glyph of a plurality of glyphs of the passage of text:

obtaining a glyph representation corresponding to a current glyph, said glyph representation comprising a set of two dimensional coordinates; and

varying said set of two dimensional coordinates according to a geometric transformation to obtain a varied glyph representation, said geometric transformation having been determined from statistical measurements of at least one geometric property from an ensemble of representations of said current glyph; and

generating renderable output data comprising each varied glyph representation, such that when the passage of text is rendered to an output device, a given rendered representation of a given glyph subtly differs from other rendered representations of said given glyph according to said at least one geometric property.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein varying said set of two dimensional coordinates according to said geometric transformation comprises:

determining at least one geometric variation function; and

transforming said set of two dimensional coordinates according to said at least one geometric variation function to obtain a variant glyph representation of said current glyph that differs from said glyph representation according to said at least one geometric property.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , the method further comprising:

obtaining at least one image of handwritten text; and

identifying a plurality of glyph representations of each glyph, as depicted in said at least one image of handwritten text.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein identifying said plurality of glyph representations comprises:

segmenting said at least one image of handwritten text into at least one disjoint component image corresponding to a plurality of individual glyphs connected by a plurality of ligatures;

sectioning said at least one disjoint component image into a plurality of non-overlapping segments; and

determining a set of one or more adjacent non-overlapping segments corresponding to each of said plurality of individual glyphs.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein said at least one geometric variation function is determined based at least in part on said plurality of glyph representations.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein identifying said plurality of glyph representations comprises selecting said glyph representation from among said plurality of glyph representations.

15. A non-transient computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon instructions that when executed by a processor, configure the processor to perform a method for variably rendering a passage of text, the method comprising:

for each glyph of a plurality of glyphs of the passage of text:

obtaining a glyph representation corresponding to a current glyph, said glyph representation comprising a set of two dimensional coordinates; and

varying said set of two dimensional coordinates according to a geometric transformation to obtain a varied glyph representation, said geometric transformation having been determined from statistical measurements of at least one geometric property from an ensemble of representations of said current glyph; and

generating renderable output data comprising each varied glyph representation, such that when the passage of text is rendered to an output device, a given rendered representation of a given glyph subtly differs from other rendered representations of said given glyph according to said at least one geometric property.

16. The storage medium of claim 15 , wherein varying said set of two dimensional coordinates according to said geometric transformation comprises:

determining at least one geometric variation function; and

transforming said set of two dimensional coordinates according to said at least one geometric variation function to obtain a variant glyph representation of said current glyph that differs from said glyph representation according to said at least one geometric property.

17. The storage medium of claim 16 , the method further comprising:

obtaining at least one image of handwritten text; and

identifying a plurality of glyph representations of each glyph, as depicted in said at least one image of handwritten text.

18. The storage medium of claim 17 , wherein identifying said plurality of glyph representations comprises:

segmenting said at least one image of handwritten text into at least one disjoint component image corresponding to a plurality of individual glyphs connected by a plurality of ligatures;

sectioning said at least one disjoint component image into a plurality of non-overlapping segments; and

determining a set of one or more adjacent non-overlapping segments corresponding to each of said plurality of individual glyphs.
