Abstract

A user equipment UE reports its mobility state in signaling for establishing, re-establishing, or re-configuring a radio connection between the UE and a network access node. In one embodiment the reported mobility state is selected from among normal; medium and high. In another embodiment the reported mobility state informs of a number of cell changes the UE has performed within a predetermined evaluation period. The UE may also include an indication whether a hysteresis period for entering into a normal mobility state is running for the UE. The network configures the UE in dependence on the reported mobility state, such as setting a parameter for measuring or reporting neighbor cells (e.g., suspend a serving cell quality threshold as a condition for measuring/reporting; limit inter-frequency and/or inter-radio access technology reporting; set a shortest measurement, reporting gap; disable an event trigger; and/or set layer 3 filtering of measurement results for faster reporting).

Claims (37)

1. An apparatus for reporting a mobility state comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one computer readable memory including computer program code;

the at least one memory and the computer program code configured with the at least one processor to cause the apparatus to perform at least the operations of:

directing at least one message to establish, re-establish or re-configure a radio connection between a user equipment and a network access node;

determining a mobility state of the user equipment; and

reporting the determined mobility state of the user equipment in the at least one message that is being directed to establish, re-establish or re-configure the radio connection between the user equipment and the network access node.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the determined mobility state which is reported is selected from the group consisting of: normal; medium and high.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the determined mobility state which is reported further comprises an indication whether a hysteresis period for entering into a normal mobility state is running for the user equipment.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the determined mobility state which is reported informs of a number of cell changes the user equipment has performed within a predetermined evaluation period.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the determined mobility state which is reported further comprises an indication whether a hysteresis period for entering into a normal mobility state is running for the user equipment.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one message includes: a radio resource control connection setup complete message; a radio resource control connection request message;

a radio resource control connection reestablishment complete message; and a radio resource control connection reconfiguration complete message.

7. A method for reporting a mobility state comprising:

directing at least one message to establish, re-establish or re-configure a radio connection between a user equipment and a network access node;

determining a mobility state of the user equipment; and

reporting the determined mobility state of the user equipment in the at least one message that is being directed to establish, re-establish or re-configure the radio connection between the user equipment and the network access node.

8. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the determined mobility state which is reported is selected from the group consisting of: normal; medium and high.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the determined mobility state which is reported further comprises an indication whether a hysteresis period for entering into a normal mobility state is running for the user equipment.

10. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the determined mobility state which is reported informs of a number of cell changes the user equipment has performed within a predetermined evaluation period.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the determined mobility state which is reported further comprises an indication whether a hysteresis period for entering into a normal mobility state is running for the user equipment.

12. The method according to claim 7 , in which the method is executed by the user equipment.

13. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the step of directing at least one message to establish, re-establish or re-configure the radio connection between the user equipment and the network access node comprises directing a radio resource control connection setup complete message, a radio resource control connection request message, a radio resource control connection reestablishment complete message, or a radio resource control connection reconfiguration complete message, such that the determined mobility state of the user equipment is reported in the radio resource control connection setup complete message, the radio resource control connection request message, the radio resource control connection reestablishment complete message, or the radio resource control connection reconfiguration complete message.

14. A non-transient computer readable memory storing a computer program executable by a processor which, when executed by the processor, causes the performance of operations comprising:

directing at least one message to establish, re-establish or re-configure a radio connection between a user equipment and a network access node;

determining a mobility state of the user equipment; and

reporting the determined mobility state of the user equipment in the at least one message that is being directed to establish, re-establish or re-configure the radio connection between the user equipment and the network access node.

15. The non-transient computer readable memory according to claim 14 , wherein the at least one message includes: a radio resource control connection setup complete message; a radio resource control connection request message; a radio resource control connection reestablishment complete message; and a radio resource control connection reconfiguration complete message.

16. The non-transient computer readable memory according to claim 14 ,

wherein the determining of the mobility state comprises determining the mobility state from the group consisting of: normal; medium and high.

17. The non-transient computer readable memory according to claim 14 , wherein the determining of the mobility state comprises informing of a number of cell changes the user equipment has performed within a predetermined evaluation period.

18. The non-transient computer readable memory according to claim 14 , wherein the determining of the mobility state comprises providing an indication whether a hysteresis period for entering into a normal mobility state is running for the user equipment.

19. A method for configuring user equipment comprising:

receiving at least one message that establishes, re-establishes, or re-configures a radio connection between a user equipment and a network access node;
