Abstract

A flow setup table in a basestation breakout component allows for servicing non-cacheable IP data flows at the breakout component without the need for network address translation. For each broken out IP flow at the breakout component, the flow setup table holds a mapping between tunnel IDs and the IP related information. The flow setup table data is sent to the breakout component at the gateway. The gateway breakout component uses the flow setup table to forward non-cacheable data requests to the internet and return data received from the internet back to the basestation breakout component. The basestation component then sends the non-cacheable data in the correct tunnel to the user equipment requesting the data.

Claims (43)

1. A method for processing data packets in a mobile data network that includes a radio access network coupled to a core network, the method comprising the steps of:

a plurality of antennas sending and receiving network messages between user equipment and a plurality of basestations in the radio access network, each basestation communicating with a corresponding one of the plurality of antennas;

providing a first service mechanism in the radio access network and a second service mechanism in the core network;

establishing breakout authorization criteria on the second service mechanism;

the second service mechanism in the core network performs the steps of:

monitoring network messages in the core network to determine traffic that meets the breakout authorization criteria; and

sending a message to the first service mechanism with subscriber information for network messages that meet the breakout authorization criteria;

the first service mechanism in the radio access network that performs the following steps for subscriber sessions authorized with subscriber information from the second service mechanism:

applying packet inspection to determine what messages in the radio access network meet breakout conditions; and

breaking out internet protocol (IP) traffic flows that meet the breakout conditions to be serviced by the first service mechanism;

communicating between the first service mechanism and the second service mechanism on an overlay network;

the first service mechanism establishing a packet data protocol (PDP) context with a user equipment for broken out data, wherein the first service mechanism includes a first optimizer and a transmission control protocol (TCP) context for an application in the UE that is broken out on the second data path;

the first service mechanism building a flow setup table, where the flow setup table includes tunnel endpoint identification information and associated internet protocol (IP) flow information for non-cacheable data requests by the user equipment;

sending the flow setup table to the second service mechanism; and

the second service mechanism using data of the flow setup table to fetch non-cacheable data from an internet.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of:

forwarding the non-cacheable data from the internet back to the first service mechanism on the overlay network.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of:

the first service mechanism updating the status in the flow setup table.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the tunnel endpoint identification information in the flow setup table includes a pair of tunnel endpoint identifiers.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the flow setup table further includes a status of a TCP connection.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the status indicates to the second service mechanism that data of the TCP connection is non-cacheable.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the IP data information includes an IP addresses, and a port number.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the first service mechanism and the second service mechanism breakout a user session to perform the first service without requiring change to hardware in other components in the mobile data network.

9. A method for processing data packets in a mobile data network that includes a radio access network coupled to a core network, the method comprising the steps of:

a plurality of antennas sending and receiving network messages between user equipment and a plurality of basestations in the radio access network, each basestation communicating with a corresponding one of the plurality of antennas;

providing a first service mechanism in the radio access network and a second service mechanism in the core network;

establishing breakout authorization criteria on the second service mechanism;

the second service mechanism in the core network performs the steps of:

monitoring network messages in the core network to determine traffic that meets the breakout authorization criteria; and

sending a message to the first service mechanism with subscriber information for network messages that meet the breakout authorization criteria;

the first service mechanism in the radio access network that performs the following two steps for subscriber sessions authorized with subscriber information from the second service mechanism:

applying packet inspection to determine what messages in the radio access network meet breakout conditions; and

breaking out internet protocol (IP) traffic flows that meet the breakout conditions to be serviced by the first service mechanism;

communicating between the first service mechanism and the second service mechanism on an overlay network;

the first service mechanism establishing a packet data protocol (PDP) context with a user equipment for broken out data, wherein the first service mechanism includes a first optimizer and a transmission control protocol (TCP) context for an application in the UE that is broken out on the second data path;

the first service mechanism building a flow setup table, where the flow setup table includes tunnel endpoint identification information and associated internet protocol (IP) flow information for non-cacheable data requests by the user equipment;

sending the flow setup table to the second service mechanism;

the second service mechanism using data of the flow setup table to fetch non-cacheable data from an internet;

forwarding the non-cacheable data from the internet back to the first service mechanism on the overlay network; and

the first service mechanism updating the status in the flow setup table.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the IP data information includes an IP address, and a port number.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the flow setup table further includes a status of the TCP connection.
