Abstract

A method of displaying a high dynamic range image, comprising receiving the high dynamic range image, calculating a first set of tone mapping parameters as a function of the high dynamic range image, sub-sampling the first set of tone mapping parameters at a first resolution to create a first sub-sampled parameter set, creating a first tone-mapped image by processing the high dynamic range image as a function of the first sub-sampled parameter set, and displaying the first tone-mapped image. A method of composting a plurality of versions of an image to create the high dynamic range image is also disclosed such that the compositing may be modified as a function of received user input.

Claims (16)

1. A method to selectively and interactively fine-tune the tone-mapping of an image, the input image having a large dynamic range and the output image being adjusted for display on a low dynamic range display or output, comprising the steps of:

a) calculating a first set of values, different from the high dynamic range input image;

b) calculating a first output image as a second version of an output image with a lower dynamic range, as a function of said first set of values and the high dynamic range input image;

c) displaying said first output image;

d) receiving user input comprising allowing a user to indicate desired changes at locations within the image;

e) calculating a second set of values based on the high dynamic range input image and said user input;

f) calculating a second output image as a function of said first set of values and said second set of values; and

g) displaying said second output image.

2. The method of claim 1 , where the user input data is gathered comprising IRPs.

3. The method of claim 1 , where the user input data is gathered comprising IRRs.

4. The method of claim 1 , where the second version of an output image with a lower dynamic range is a lower resolution version.

5. The method of claim 1 , where the first set of values are calculated as a function of the luminosities of the high dynamic range input image.

6. The method of claim 1 , where the desired changes are desired brightness changes.

7. The method of claim 1 , where the desired changes are desired contrast changes.

8. The method of claim 1 , where the desired changes are desired sharpness changes.

9. The method of claim 1 , where the desired changes are desired color temperature changes.
