Abstract

One or multiple bit restricted access window (RAW) end point determination within for single user, multiple user, multiple access, and/or MIMO wireless communications. A RAW is defined in which only devices of the particular class (e.g., low power class, Z class, smart meter station (SMSTA) class, etc.) are allowed access to the communication medium. Indication of the end of such a RAW may be included within one or more bits set within a signal field (SIG) field of a framer packet generated by a given device within the system and transmitted to one or more other devices. After completion of the RAW, other respective devices of at least one other type of class may be provided access to the communication medium. The manner of access to the communication media outside of the RAW may be varied (e.g., scheduled, based on carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA), etc.).

Claims (49)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a baseband processing module configured to generate a frame that includes a signal field (SIG) that includes at least one bit therein set to indicate a restricted access window (RAW) corresponding to a time period in which at least one wireless communication device of a first class has access to a communication medium within a communication system that includes a plurality of wireless communication devices; and

the plurality of wireless communication devices includes the at least one wireless communication device of the first class and at least one communication device of a second class;

after an end of the RAW, the at least one wireless communication device of the second class has the access to the communication medium;

during the RAW, no wireless communication device of the second class has the access to the communication medium and only the at least one wireless communication device of the first class has the access to the communication medium; and

outside of the RAW, the at least one communication device of the second class and the at least one wireless communication device of the first class has the access to the communication medium based on carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA).

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the RAW ending after elapse of a plurality of slot idle times following transmission of the frame or the signal corresponding to the frame.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the RAW ending after completion of transmission of the frame or the signal corresponding to the frame to the at least one of the plurality of wireless communication devices.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the frame includes a clear to send (CTS) communication or an acknowledgement (ACK) communication.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one communication device of the first class wireless communication device includes at least one smart meter station (SMSTA), and the at least one communication device of the second class includes at least one wireless station (STA).

6. An apparatus comprising:

a baseband processing module configured to generate a frame that includes a signal field (SIG) that includes at least one bit therein set to indicate a restricted access window (RAW) corresponding to a time period in which at least one wireless communication device of a first class has access to a communication medium within a communication system that includes a plurality of wireless communication devices; and

a radio configured to transmit the frame or a signal corresponding to the frame to at least one of the plurality of wireless communication devices, wherein:

the plurality of wireless communication devices includes the at least one wireless communication device of the first class and at least one communication device of a second class; and

after an end of the RAW, the at least one wireless communication device of the second class has the access to the communication medium.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein:

the RAW ending after elapse of a plurality of slot idle times following transmission of the frame or the signal corresponding to the frame; and

the at least one communication device of the second class has the access to the communication medium after a period of time following the end of the RAW.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein:

the RAW ending after completion of transmission of the frame or the signal corresponding to the frame to the at least one of the plurality of wireless communication devices; and

the at least one communication device of the second class has the access to the communication medium after a period of time following the end of the RAW.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the frame includes a clear to send (CTS) communication or an acknowledgement (ACK) communication.

10. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein:

during the RAW, no wireless communication device of the second class has the access to the communication medium and only the at least one wireless communication device of the first class has the access to the communication medium; and

outside of the RAW, the at least one communication device of the second class and the at least one wireless communication device of the first class has the access to the communication medium.

11. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein:

outside of the RAW, the at least one communication device of the second class and the at least one wireless communication device of the first class has the access to the communication medium based on carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA).

12. The apparatus of claim 6 further comprising:

at least one additional wireless communication device of the first class configured to observe the at least one bit set within the SIG to indicate the RAW to determine use of the RAW by the at least one wireless communication device of the first class in accessing the communication medium.

13. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the at least one communication device of the first class wireless communication device includes at least one smart meter station (SMSTA), and the at least one communication device of the second class includes at least one wireless station (STA).

14. A method for execution by a communication device, the method comprising:

generating a frame that includes a signal field (SIG) that includes at least one bit therein set to indicate a restricted access window (RAW) corresponding to a time period in which at least one wireless communication device of a first class has access to a communication medium within a communication system that includes a plurality of wireless communication devices; and

via a radio of the communication device, transmitting the frame or a signal corresponding to the frame to at least one of the plurality of wireless communication devices, wherein:

the plurality of wireless communication devices includes the at least one wireless communication device of the first class and at least one communication device of a second class; and

after an end of the RAW, the at least one wireless communication device of the second class has the access to the communication medium.
