Abstract

A bone screw and a method for manufacturing the same includes a screw thread configuration having one or more grooves cut into a leading face of the thread, a trailing face of the thread, and/or the shaft between the threads. Other implementations include the incorporation of facets into the one or more grooves. The implementation of the one or more grooves increases the surface are of the orthopedic screw and functions to increase in anchoring the bone screw within the bone once inserted therein, and thereby reduce the possibility for the screw backing out after insertion.

Claims (24)

1. An orthopedic screw comprising:

a shaft;

a plurality of first threads helically cut into at least a portion of said shaft, said first threads having a leading edge, a trailing edge and a depth, wherein a portion of the shaft remains between the leading edge and trailing edge of adjacent first threads; and

at least one groove helically formed in the portion of the shaft between the leading edge and trailing edge of adjacent first threads and being configured to increase a surface area of the shaft, said at least one groove being cut into the shaft with a varying radii with respect to a central axis of the shaft throughout the groove.

2. The orthopedic screw of claim 1 , wherein said at least one groove has a V-shaped cross section.

3. The orthopedic screw of claim 1 , wherein the at least one groove has an upside down V-shaped cross section.

4. The orthopedic screw of claim 1 , further comprising at least one medication disposed within the plurality of first threads.

5. The orthopedic screw of claim 1 , further comprising at least one medication disposed in the at least one groove helically formed in the portion of the shaft between the leading edge and trailing edge of adjacent first threads.

6. The orthopedic screw of claim 4 , wherein said at least one medication is disposed in a portion of said plurality of first threads.

7. The orthopedic screw of claim 5 , wherein said at least one medication is disposed in a portion of said at least one groove.

8. The orthopedic screw of claim 6 , wherein said at least one medication is disposed on at least a portion of a surface of said plurality of first threads.

9. The orthopedic screw of claim 7 , wherein said at least one medication is disposed on at least a portion of a surface of said at least one groove.

10. An orthopedic screw comprising:

a shaft;

a plurality of first threads helically cut into at least a portion of said shaft, said first threads having a leading edge, a trailing edge and a depth, wherein a portion of the shaft remains between the leading edge and trailing edge of adjacent first threads;

at least one V-shaped groove helically formed in the portion of the shaft between the leading edge and trailing edge of adjacent first threads and being configured to increase a surface area of the shaft, said at least one groove being cut into the shaft with a varying radii with respect to a central axis of the shaft throughout the groove; and

a medication disposed in at least a portion of the at least one V-shaped groove.

11. An orthopedic screw comprising:

a shaft;

a plurality of first threads helically cut into at least a portion of said shaft, said first threads having a leading edge, a trailing edge and a depth, wherein a portion of the shaft remains between the leading edge and trailing edge of adjacent first threads;

at least one U-shaped groove helically formed in the portion of the shaft between the leading edge and trailing edge of adjacent first threads and being configured to increase a surface area of the shaft, said at least one groove being cut into the shaft with a varying radii with respect to a central axis of the shaft throughout the groove; and

a medication disposed in at least a portion of the at least one U-shaped groove.

12. The orthopedic screw according to claim 10 , wherein said medication is disposed on at least a portion of a surface of the V-shaped groove.

13. The orthopedic screw according to claim 11 , wherein said medication is disposed on at least a portion of a surface of the U-shaped groove.
