Abstract

A medical appliance or prosthesis may comprise one or more layers of rotational spun nanofibers, including rotational spun polymers. The rotational spun material may comprise layers including layers of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Rotational spun nanofiber mats of certain porosities may permit tissue ingrowth into or attachment to the prosthesis. Additionally, one or more cuffs may be configured to allow tissue ingrowth to anchor the prosthesis.

Claims (33)

1. A method for inhibiting a neointimal hyperplasia response to an implantable tubular medical appliance, the method comprising implanting the tubular medical appliance into a patient, wherein the tubular medical appliance comprises:

a first polymer layer disposed on an inside surface of the tubular medical appliance, wherein the first polymer layer is a rotational spun fibrous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) layer comprising a porous mat;

a nonporous second polymer layer that inhibits tissue ingrowth into or through the second polymer layer, wherein the second polymer layer comprises fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP); and

a third polymer layer comprising a porous fluoropolymer;

wherein the second polymer layer is disposed between the first polymer layer and the third polymer layer;

wherein the first polymer layer has an average pore size of between 2 microns and 8 microns; and

wherein the rotational spun fibrous PTFE layer comprises PTFE that has been expelled from a rotating spinneret and sintered.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer layer permits endothelial cell growth or attachment on the surface of the first polymer layer.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the third polymer layer comprises a fibrous PTFE layer.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the first polymer layer and the third polymer layer each comprise a rotational spun micro or nano-fiber PTFE mat.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second polymer layer comprises a dip coating of FEP.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second polymer layer comprises a spray coating of FEP.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous fluropolymer of the third polymer layer comprises ePTFE.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer layer has a porosity of between about 45% and 50%.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rotational spun PTFE layer is formed in the absence of an electric field.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer layer has an average pore size of between 2 microns and 5 microns.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer layer, when placed in vivo, has an H-score of less than 100 two weeks after murine implantation.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous fluoropolymer of the third polymer layer comprises PTFE.

13. A method for inhibiting a neointimal hyperplasia response to an implantable tubular medical appliance, the method comprising implanting the tubular medical appliance into a patient, wherein the tubular medical appliance comprises:

a first serially deposited PTFE layer defining an inside surface of the tubular medical appliance, wherein the deposited PTFE is rotational spun and sintered PTFE;

a second nonporous polymer layer that inhibits tissue ingrowth into or through the second polymer layer, wherein the second polymer layer comprises fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP);

a third polymer layer comprising a porous fluoropolymer;

wherein the first serially deposited layer has an average pore size between 2 microns and 5 microns; and

wherein the rotational spun PTFE is formed by expulsion from a rotating spinneret.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the first serially deposited layer permits endothelial cell growth or attachment on the surface of the first serially deposited layer.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second polymer layer comprises a dip coating of FEP.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second polymer layer comprises a spray coating of FEP.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second polymer layer is disposed between the first serially deposited layer and the third polymer layer.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the porous fluoropolymer of the third polymer layer comprises ePTFE.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the first serially deposited PTFE layer has a porosity of between about 45% and 50%.

20. The method of claim 13 , wherein the rotational spun PTFE layer is formed in the absence of an electric field.

21. The method of claim 13 , wherein the first serially deposited PTFE layer, when placed in vivo, has an H-score of less than 100 two weeks after murine implantation.

22. The method of claim 13 , wherein the porous fluoropolymer of the third polymer layer comprises PTFE.
