Abstract

A quick-connect drill bit assembly comprising a drive shank and a drill bit releasably attached to the drive shank, the drill bit being configured to bore a first hole in a bone through a drill guide. A portion of the drill bit is configured to remain within the first hole after the drive shank is detached therefrom, the drill bit being configured to prevent the drill guide from rotating with respect to the bone as a second hole is bored into the bone.

Claims (19)

1. A method of drilling a glenoid cavity with a drill guide, the method comprising the steps of:

advancing a drill guide over an alignment pin extending from the glenoid cavity, the alignment pin having a longitudinal axis;

adjoining a first drive shank section to a second drive shank section at a collar;

associating a first drill bit to a shank opening in the second drive shank section;

coupling a drive attachment defined by the first drive shank section to a chuck of a drill;

using the drill to create a first hole in the glenoid cavity through a first guide hole of the drill guide by rotatably activating the first drill bit;

disassociating the drill from the first drill bit while the first drill bit is still inserted into the glenoid cavity through the drill guide;

substantially preventing the drill guide from rotating with respect to the longitudinal axis of the alignment pin with the first drill bit; and

using the drill to create a second hole in the glenoid cavity through a second guide hole of the drill guide by rotatably activating a second drill bit.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising connecting a quick-connect guide handle to the drill guide.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of advancing the drill guide over the alignment pin comprises using the quick-connect guide handle to advance an opening of the drill guide along the alignment pin until the drill guide is fully seated against the glenoid cavity.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of using a drill to create a first hole in the glenoid cavity comprises causing a drive shank releasably coupled to the drill bit to rotate as the drill is activated.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of disassociating the drill from the first drill bit comprises magnetically disengaging the drive shank from the first drill bit once the first drill bit establishes a frictional interface with the glenoid cavity.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising causing the first drill bit to stop rotating before disassociating the drill from the first drill bit.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising disassociating the drill from the second drill bit while the second drill bit is still inserted into the glenoid cavity through the drill guide.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising the steps of:

using the drill to create a third hole in the glenoid cavity through a third guide hole of the drill guide by rotatably activating a third drill bit, wherein the first and second drill bits help prevent the drill guide from rotating with respect to the glenoid cavity as the third hole is created; and

disassociating the drill from the third drill bit while the third drill bit is still inserted into the glenoid cavity through the drill guide.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising removing the first, second and third drill bits from the glenoid cavity as the drill guide is unseated from the glenoid cavity and over the alignment pin.
