Abstract

Bone plate systems for surgical implants and bone repair are provided. The bone plate is multi-tiered for receiving bone anchors for securing a plurality of bones or bone fragments in a desired relationship. The plate members include throughbores for receiving a pivot base therein, with head ends of the bone anchors being secured within the pivot bases. The throughbores may permit and define a translation path for the pivot base and the bone anchor secured therein relative to the plate. The configuration of the pivot base and the throughbore facilitate pivoting and optional translation of the pivot base relative to the plate. With the bone anchor seated within the pivot base, an apparatus for inhibiting bone anchor back out is employed.

Claims (17)

1. A surgical system comprising:

a bone anchor having a resilient head portion; and

a surgical instrument comprising:

a handle;

a bone anchor engagement portion connected to the handle;

a compression shaft shiftable toward the handle to a retracted position thereof and away from the handle to an extended position thereof;

a resilient compression jaw generally concentric with the compression shaft, the compression jaw including an engagement portion having an initial configuration wherein the engagement portion engages the resilient head portion of the bone anchor and an inwardly deflected, compressed configuration wherein the engagement portion compresses the resilient head portion of the bone anchor radially inward;

a compression shaft actuation lever pivotal between a compression shaft retraction orientation and a compression shaft advancement orientation, the compression shaft actuation lever having cam surfaces operable to shift the compression shaft away from the handle and along the compression jaw to the extended position with pivoting of the compression shaft actuation lever to the compression shaft advancement orientation which shifts the compression jaw engagement portion from the initial configuration to the inwardly deflected, compressed configuration and compresses the resilient head portion of the bone anchor radially inward; and

the compression jaw being configured to apply a biasing load against the compression shaft in the extended position thereof, the biasing load being sufficient to bias the compression shaft back to the retracted position with pivoting of the compression shaft actuation lever to the compression shaft retraction orientation.

2. The surgical system of claim 1 wherein the compression shaft actuation lever is a cam-action lever wherein at least one cam surface advances the compression shaft relative to the bone anchor and at least one cam surface retracts the compression shaft relative to the bone anchor, and the resilient compression jaw is operable to bias the compression shaft back to the retracted position when the cam-action lever is toggled from the compression shaft advancement cam surface to the compression shaft retraction cam surface.

3. The surgical system of claim 1 wherein the compression shaft actuation lever is a cam-action lever wherein at least one cam surface advances the compression shaft relative to the bone anchor and at least one cam surface allows retraction of the compression shaft relative to the bone anchor.

4. The surgical system of claim 1 wherein the bone anchor engagement portion and the resilient compression jaw are fixed against movement relative to each other.

5. The surgical system of claim 1 wherein the bone anchor resilient head portion includes a plurality of members having a first configuration with the compression jaw engagement portion in the initial configuration and engaged with the resilient head portion and the plurality of members having a compressed, second configuration with the compression jaw engagement portion in the inwardly deflected, compressed configuration.

6. The surgical system of claim 1 wherein the bone anchor includes a bore and the bone anchor engagement portion is configured to extend into the bore of the bone anchor.

7. The surgical system of claim 6 wherein the compression jaw engagement portions extend about the bone anchor engagement portion and shifting the compression jaw engagement portion from the initial configuration to the inwardly deflected, compressed configuration compresses the resilient head portion toward the bone anchor engagement portion.

8. The surgical system of claim 1 wherein the bone anchor engagement portion includes a shaft spaced inward from the compression jaw.

9. The surgical system of claim 1 wherein the bone anchor engagement portion has a cross shape.
