Abstract

A modular IOL system including intraocular primary and secondary components, which, when combined, form an intraocular optical correction device, wherein the secondary component is placed on the primary component within the perimeter of the capsulorhexis, thus avoiding the need to touch or otherwise manipulate the capsular bag. The secondary component may be manipulated, removed, and/or exchanged for a different secondary component for correction or modification of the optical result, on an intra-operative or post-operative basis, without the need to remove the primary component and without the need to manipulate the capsular bag. The primary component may have haptics extending therefrom for centration in the capsular bag, and the secondary component may exclude haptics, relying instead on attachment to the primary lens for stability. Such attachment may reside radially inside the perimeter of the capsulorhexis and radially outside the field of view to avoid interference with light transmission.

Claims (35)

1. A method of implanting an intraocular lens (IOL) into a native lens capsule, comprising:

a. placing a primary component into the lens capsule, wherein the primary component has a body, one or more haptics, a center hole extending in an anterior-posterior direction through the body to form a continuous annular ring having an inside perimeter, and a continuous recess extending around an entirety of the inside perimeter, the continuous recess being defined by an anterior-facing posterior wall and a radially-inward-facing lateral wall, wherein the radially-inward-facing lateral wall includes diametrically spaced extensions extending anteriorly of and radially inward from the radially-inward-facing lateral wall;

b. radially compressing a secondary component having an optical portion; and

c. inserting the radially-compressed secondary component into the continuous recess of the primary component so that an entire posterior periphery of the secondary component contacts the anterior-facing posterior wall of the recess, and only the diametrically spaced extensions interlock with and extend over an anterior peripheral edge of the secondary component at discrete, diametrically spaced apart junctions so as to limit relative anterior and posterior movement between the primary and the secondary components; and wherein, in an implanted configuration, the IOL provides optical correction to an eye solely via the optical portion of the secondary component, an anterior surface of each of the diametrically spaced extensions is flush and even with an anterior surface of the optical portion of the secondary component, and the radially-inward-facing lateral wall of the continuous recess, except at the diametrically spaced extensions, is posterior to the anterior peripheral edge of the secondary component, such that the anterior peripheral edge is exposed between the diametrically spaced extensions.

2. A method as in claim 1 , further comprising:

removing the secondary component from the primary component without the secondary component touching the lens capsule.

3. A method as in claim 2 , further comprising:

securing a different secondary component having a different optical property to the primary component without the different secondary component touching the lens capsule.

4. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the secondary component is placed over the center hole.

5. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the optical portion is centered over the center hole.

6. A method of implanting a modular intraocular lens (IOL) in a lens capsule of an eye, wherein the modular IOL includes a primary component releasably attached to a secondary component having an optical portion with a first optical correction, the method comprising:

a. preparing the lens capsule for implantation of an IOL including forming a capsulorhexis;

b. placing the primary component into the lens capsule, wherein the primary component has a body and one or more haptics, wherein the body is annular and defines a through opening having an inside perimeter, the body further including a continuous recess extending around an entirety of the inside perimeter, the continuous recess being defined by an anterior-facing posterior wall and a radially-inward-facing lateral wall, wherein the radially-inward-facing lateral wall includes diametrically spaced extensions extending anteriorly of and radially inward from the radially-inward-facing lateral wall;

c. radially compressing the secondary component; and

d. inserting the radially-compressed secondary component into the continuous recess of the primary component such that an entire posterior periphery of the secondary component contacts the anterior-facing posterior wall of the recess, and only the diametrically spaced extensions interlock with and extend over an anterior peripheral edge of the secondary component at discrete, diametrically spaced apart junctions so as to limit relative anterior and posterior movement between the primary and the secondary components; and wherein, in an implanted configuration, the IOL provides optical correction to the eye solely via the optical portion of the secondary component, an anterior surface of each of the diametrically spaced extensions is flush and even with an anterior surface of the optical portion of the secondary component, and the radially-inward-facing lateral wall of the continuous recess, except at the diametrically spaced extensions, is posterior to the anterior peripheral edge of the secondary component, such that the anterior peripheral edge is exposed between the diametrically spaced extensions;

e. measuring an optical result with the primary and secondary components disposed in the lens capsule; and

f. modifying the optical result by replacing the secondary component with a different secondary component.

7. A method as in claim 6 , wherein the secondary component is replaced intra-operatively.

8. A method as in claim 6 , wherein the secondary component is replaced post-operatively.

9. A method as in claim 6 , wherein the different secondary component includes a second optical correction different from the first optical correction.

10. A method as in claim 6 , wherein replacing the secondary component comprises changing a refractive correction.

11. A method as in claim 6 , wherein replacing the secondary component comprises changing a toric correction.

12. A method as in claim 6 , wherein replacing the secondary component comprises changing a multifocal correction.

13. A method as in claim 6 , wherein the optical portion is centered over the through opening.

14. A method of implanting a modular intraocular lens (IOL) in a lens capsule of an eye, wherein the modular IOL includes a base releasably attached to a lens, the method comprising:

a. preparing the lens capsule for implantation of an IOL including forming a capsulorhexis;

b. placing the base into the lens capsule, wherein the base has a body, a plurality of haptics extending from the body, a center opening extending in an anterior-posterior direction through the body to form a continuous annular ring having an inside perimeter, and a continuous recess extending around an entirety of the inside perimeter, the continuous recess being defined by an anterior-facing posterior wall and a radially-inward-facing lateral wall, wherein the radially-inward-facing lateral wall includes diametrically spaced extensions extending anteriorly of and radially inward from the radially-inward-facing lateral wall;

c. radially compressing the lens; and

d. inserting the radially-compressed lens into the continuous recess of the base such that an entire posterior periphery of the lens contacts the anterior-facing posterior wall of the recess, and only the diametrically spaced extensions interlock with and extend over an anterior side peripheral edge of the lens to form discrete, diametrically spaced apart junctions so as to limit relative anterior and posterior movement between the base and the lens, wherein, in an implanted configuration, the IOL provides optical correction to the eye solely via the lens, an anterior surface of each of the diametrically spaced extensions is flush and even with an anterior surface of the lens, the radially-inward-facing lateral wall of the continuous recess, except at the diametrically spaced extensions, is posterior to the anterior peripheral edge of the lens, such that the anterior peripheral edge is exposed between the diametrically spaced extensions, and the two diametrically spaced apart junctions reside radially within a perimeter of the capsulorhexis.

15. The method as in claim 14 , further comprising:

removing the lens from the base without the lens touching the lens capsule.

16. The method as in claim 15 , further comprising:

inserting a second lens having a different optical property from the lens into the base without the second lens touching the lens capsule.

17. The method as in claim 14 , wherein the lens is positioned over the center opening.

18. The method as in claim 14 , wherein the optical correction is modified post-operatively by replacing the lens with a different lens having a different optical correction.
