Abstract

The present invention generally relates to a method for sequestering carbon dioxide. Biomass is converted into paraffinic hydrocarbons. The paraffinic hydrocarbons are steam cracked into olefins. The olefins are polymerized into non-biodegradable polyolefins.

Claims (35)

1. A method comprising steam cracking paraffinic hydrocarbons into olefins, wherein

the paraffinic hydrocarbons are derived from a biomass; and

bio-derived pyrolysis gasoline comprising C 5 -C 10 olefins is produced as a byproduct of the steam cracking.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the paraffinic hydrocarbons are produced by gasification followed by Fischer-Tropsch conversion.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the paraffinic hydrocarbons are produced by the hydrotreating of fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters comprise oils from plants.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters comprise fats from animals.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters comprise oils from algae.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the algae are grown in ponds and/or photo-bioreactors with CO 2 supplied from a stationary emission source.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the stationary emission source is a coal-fired power plant.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the olefins comprise ethylene, propylene, butenes, and butadiene.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein bio-derived hydrogen is produced as a byproduct of steam cracking.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein bio-derived fuel gas is produced as a byproduct of steam cracking.

12. The bio-derived pyrolysis gasoline produced by the method of claim 1 , wherein the bio-derived pyrolysis gasoline comprises about 30 wt % to about 50 wt % aromatics and about 5 wt % to about 20 wt % n-paraffins.

13. A motor gasoline comprising the bio-derived pyrolysis gasoline of claim 1 .

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the steam cracking produces a steamcracking product comprising light olefins, the bio-derived pyrolysis gasoline, and pyrolysis fuel oil.

15. The steam cracking product of claim 14 , wherein the pyrolysis fuel oil yield is less than 1 wt % of the paraffinic hydrocarbons.

16. The motor gasoline of claim 13 , wherein the bio-derived pyrolysis gasoline is hydrogenated prior to use in the motor gasoline.

17. A method comprising steam cracking paraffinic hydrocarbons into olefins, wherein:

the paraffinic hydrocarbons are derived from a biomass;

the steamcracking produces a steamcracking product comprising light olefins, pyrolysis gasoline, and pyrolysis fuel oil; and

the pyrolysis fuel oil yield is less than 1 wt % of the paraffinic hydrocarbons.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the paraffinic hydrocarbons are produced by the hydrotreating of fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters comprise oils from plants.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters comprise fats from animals.

21. The method of claim 18 , wherein the fatty acids and/or fatty acid esters comprise oils from algae.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the algae are grown in ponds and/or photo-bioreactors with CO 2 supplied from a stationary emission source.

23. The method of claim 17 , wherein the olefins comprise ethylene, propylene, butenes, and butadiene.

24. The method of claim 17 , wherein bio-derived hydrogen is produced as byproduct of the steam cracking.

25. The method of claim 17 , wherein bio-derived fuel gas is produced as a byproduct of the steam cracking.

26. The pyrolysis gasoline produced by the method of claim 17 , wherein the pyrolysis gasoline comprises C 5 -C 10 olefins.

27. The pyrolysis gasoline produced by the method of claim 17 , wherein the pyrolysis gasoline comprises about 30 wt % to about 50 wt % aromatics and about 5 wt % to about 20 wt % n-paraffins.

28. The steam cracking product of claim 17 .

29. A motor gasoline comprising the pyrolysis gasoline of claim 17 .

30. The motor gasoline of claim 29 , wherein the pyrolysis gasoline is hydrogenated prior to use in the motor gasoline.
