Abstract

Claims (43)

1. A method for transferring content across a content delivery network (CDN), the method comprising:

receiving a notification of a request, wherein the request comprises:

a client identifier, and

a content identifier;

accessing one or more global policies applicable to the request, wherein the one or more global policies identify circumstances under which clients are authorized to receive content objects from other clients instead of from servers associated with the CDN;

determining, using the one or more global policies, that a client associated with the client identifier is eligible to receive content associated with the content identifier from another client;

identifying, using the one or more global policies and the content identifier, one or more authorized transfers of at least a portion of the content;

identifying one or more eligible clients that are associated with the one or more authorized transfers; and

sending a set of client identifiers that are associated with the one or more eligible clients.

2. The method for transferring content across the CDN of claim 1 , wherein the one or more global policies control a behavior or activity of particular clients.

3. The method for transferring content across the CDN of claim 2 , wherein the one or more global policies identify circumstances under which particular clients are authorized to receive particular content objects.

The method for transferring content across the CDN of claim 1 , wherein the set of client identifiers are sent to the client associated with the client identifier such that the content associated with the content identifier is retrieved by the client from one or more of the one or more eligible clients in a peer-to-peer fashion.

5. A method for transferring content across a content delivery network (CDN), the method comprising:

generating a request for content, wherein the request specifies a content identifier as a source of the content; and

receiving in response an indication of a set of one or more eligible clients from which at least a portion of the content can be sourced,

wherein the one or more eligible clients comprise sources identified by a dispatcher configured to:

receive, at a server in a content data network, a notification of the request for content;

identify a client associated with the request;

identify one or more global policies related to the request, the one or more global policies controlling a behavior or activity of the client and identifying circumstances under which the client is authorized to receive the content;

evaluate the request for content, the evaluation being based at least partly on the identity of the client and the identified one or more global policies; and

identify one or more authorized transfers of the content based on the evaluation, wherein each eligible client of the set of one or more eligible clients comprises a source associated with one of the one or more authorized transfers of the content.

6. The method for transferring content across the CDN of claim 5 , wherein at least one of the one or more eligible clients comprises a client that communicates with the CDN that is distinct from the client associated with the request.

7. The method for transferring content across the CDN of claim 5 , wherein at least one of the one or more eligible clients comprises a server in the CDN.

8. The method for transferring content across the CDN of claim 5 , wherein at least one of the one or more eligible clients comprises an origin server.

9. The method for transferring content across the CDN of claim 5 , wherein the one or more of the global policies further includes a list of clients authorized to receive the content.

10. The method for transferring content of claim 5 , wherein the dispatcher is further configured to identify the client using an identifier sent by the client.

11. The method for transferring content across the CDN of claim 5 , wherein the one or more of the global policies further identifies a set of potentially eligible sources, the set of potentially eligible sources comprising the set of one or more eligible clients.

12. The method for transferring content across the CDN of claim 5 , wherein the dispatcher is further configured to initiate at least one of the one or more authorized transfers of the content.

13. A data transfer system configured to allow transfer of content through a content delivery network (CDN) to a client device, the data transfer system comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more memories coupled with the one or more processors, wherein the one or more processors and one or more memories are configured to, upon receiving a request from the client device for electronic content:

identify the client;

identify one or more global policies from a plurality of global policies that are applicable to the request, the plurality of global policies indicating whether particular clients are authorized to access particular electronic contents, the one or more global policies controlling a behavior or activity of the client and identifying circumstances under which the client is authorized to receive the content;

evaluate the request for content, the evaluation being based on the one or more policies; and

identify one or more authorized transfers of the content based on the evaluation, each of the one or more authorized transfers of the content comprising a transfer from an eligible source;

wherein the request specifies a content identifier as a source of the content.

14. The data transfer system configured to allow transfer of content through the content data network to a client device of claim 13 , wherein a global resource authority comprising the plurality of global policies is under control of an Internet service provider.

15. The data transfer system configured to allow transfer of content through the content data network to a client device of claim 13 , wherein a global resource authority comprising the plurality of global policies is under control of a content provider.

16. The data transfer system configured to allow transfer of content through the content data network to a client device of claim 13 , wherein a global resource authority comprising the plurality of global policies is under control of the CDN.

17. The data transfer system configured to allow transfer of content through the content data network to a client device of claim 13 , wherein the one or more policies further allow specific clients to globally access the content.

18. The data transfer system configured to allow transfer of content through the content data network to a client device of claim 13 , wherein the one or more policies further allow clients to access the content only under limited circumstances.

19. The data transfer system configured to allow transfer of content through the content data network to a client device of claim 13 , wherein the one or more policies further identify a set of potentially eligible sources, the set of potentially eligible sources comprising each eligible source associated with the one or more authorized transfers.

20. The data transfer system configured to allow transfer of content through the content data network to a client device of claim 13 , wherein the one or more processors and one or more memories are further configured to, upon receiving the request, initiate at least one of the one or more authorized transfers of the content.
