Abstract

An exercise apparatus that provides multiple different exercises for a User, including both resistance movements and isometrics. The User interacts with the apparatus by grasping a bar. A resistance mechanism is symmetrically mounted on a second bar and provides infinitely variable resistance to the User, as well as soundproof operation. There is a vertical column that allows infinite positioning of the bars for different bodily exercises, and a bench for support. The User can change the exercise resistance by verbal commands, or the apparatus can vary the exercise resistance in response to the force applied by the User. The apparatus can be operated at locations where electric service is permanently unavailable, or in zero gravity; and the apparatus can be mounted inside a shallow closet and hidden from view. To verify accuracy, the resistance can be calibrated against a known quantity of weight.

Claims (75)

1. An exercise apparatus, comprising:

a first bar of sufficient size to accommodate use by a human for bodily exercise;

a plurality of connecting bars of equal length, each connecting bar of the plurality connected directly to said first bar;

a second bar that is attached to said first bar by said plurality of connecting bars and is substantially parallel to said first bar;

said first bar and said plurality of connecting bars of equal length capable of being rotated at least three hundred degrees around the rotational center point of said second bar;

a pneumatic disc resistance mechanism attached to said second bar;

said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism positioned substantially symmetrically on said second bar in relation to the ends of said second bar;

said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism capable of applying at least one hundred pounds of exercise resistance force to the user;

said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism having a circular internal design, such that a torque measuring device can be used to measure the torque generating capacity of said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism; and

a bracket attached to said pneumatic resistance mechanism, said bracket having sufficient strength such that the assembly of said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism and said first bar and said plurality of connecting bars and said second bar and said bracket can be attached to a stationary object or surface and remain attached while bodily exercises are performed.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

said resistance mechanism is capable of applying force substantially equally in both directions of exercise movement;

said resistance mechanism is comprised of a pneumatically actuated disc;

said resistance mechanism is capable of applying force in a direction substantially parallel to said second bar; and

said resistance mechanism is capable of applying force in a circular configuration around said second bar.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , additionally comprising:

a switch activated by the User;

said switch positioned at a location on the apparatus, such that the User can make physical contact with said switch while performing a repetition of a physical exercise; and

said switch capable of sending a plurality of signals to said resistance mechanism, such that the exercise resistance applied to the User by the apparatus, will be decreased or increased, in response to the User's activation of said switch.

4. The apparatus of claim one, additionally comprising:

a vertical screw mechanism attached to said bracket;

said vertical screw mechanism positioned inside a vertical column;

said bracket extending around said vertical column;

a drive mechanism attached to said vertical column;

said drive mechanism capable of turning said vertical screw mechanism in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion;

a plurality of linear bearings;

said linear bearings attached to said vertical column; and

said bracket attached to said linear bearings; whereby

rotation of said vertical screw mechanism by said drive mechanism causes said bracket to move along said vertical column in a vertical direction.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , additionally comprising:

an attached bench of sufficient size for a human to sit or lie prone upon while performing physical exercises; and

an additional resistance mechanism attached to said bench.

6. An exercise apparatus, comprising:

a first bar of sufficient size to accommodate use by a human for bodily exercise;

a plurality of connecting bars of equal length, each connecting bar of the plurality connected directly to said first bar;

a second bar that is attached to said first bar by said plurality of connecting bars and is substantially parallel to said first bar;

said first bar and said plurality of connecting bars of equal length capable of being rotated at least three hundred degrees around the rotational center point of said second bar;

a pneumatic disc resistance mechanism attached to said second bar;

said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism positioned substantially symmetrically on said second bar in relation to the ends of said second bar;

said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism capable of applying exercise resistance force to the user, substantially equally in both directions of the user's exercise movements;

said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism capable of applying at least one hundred pounds of exercise resistance force to the user;

said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism having a circular internal design, such that a torque measuring device can be used to measure the torque generating capability of said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism;

a bracket attached to said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism;

a vertical screw mechanism attached to said bracket;

said vertical screw mechanism positioned inside a vertical column;

said bracket extending around said vertical column;

a rotational mechanism attached to said vertical column, said rotational mechanism capable of turning said vertical screw mechanism in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion;

a plurality of linear bearings;

said bracket attached to said plurality of linear bearings;

said linear bearings attached to said vertical column; and

said bracket having sufficient strength such that the assembly of said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism and said first bar and said plurality of connecting bars and said second bar and said vertical column and said vertical screw mechanism and said linear bearings and said bracket can be attached to a stationary object, and remain attached while bodily exercises are performed;

whereby rotation of said vertical screw mechanism by said rotational mechanism causes said bracket and said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism to move along said vertical column in a vertical direction.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , additionally comprising:

a bench of sufficient size for a human to sit or lie prone upon while performing physical exercises; and

an additional resistance mechanism attached to said bench.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , additionally comprising:

a base with wheels sufficient for the apparatus to be moved from location to location;

said base having sufficient weight such that the apparatus will remain in a substantially upright position while being moved from location to location in an interior or exterior environment; and

said connecting bars of sufficient length so that a human lying prone in a bed with said human's feet closest to the base of the bed, can perform upper body exercises in contact with said first bar, while said apparatus is positioned at the base of the bed that the human is lying prone in.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 , additionally comprising:

a switch activated by the user;

said switch positioned at a location on the apparatus, such that the user can make physical contact with said switch while performing a repetition of a physical exercise; and

said switch capable of sending a plurality of signals to said resistance mechanism, such that the exercise resistance applied to the user by the apparatus, will be decreased or increased, in response to user's activation of said switch.

10. An exercise apparatus, comprising:

a first bar of sufficient size to accommodate use by a human for bodily exercise;

a plurality of connecting bars of equal length, each connecting bar of the plurality connected directly to said first bar;

a second bar that is attached to said first bar by said plurality of connecting bars and is substantially parallel to said first bar;

said first bar and said plurality of connecting bars of equal length capable of being rotated at least three hundred degrees around the rotational center point of said second bar;

a pneumatic disc resistance mechanism attached to said second bar;

said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism positioned substantially symmetrically on said second bar in relation to the ends of said second bar;

said pneumatic resistance mechanism capable of applying exercise resistance force to the user, substantially equally in both directions of the user's exercise movements;

said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism capable of providing at least one hundred pounds of resistance force to the human;

said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism having a circular internal design, such that a torque measuring device can be used to measure the torque generating capability of said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism; and

a bracket attached to said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism, said bracket having sufficient strength such that the assembly of said pneumatic disc resistance mechanism and said first bar and said plurality of connecting bars and said second bar and said bracket can be attached to a stationary object or surface and remain attached while bodily exercises are performed;

said apparatus capable of maintaining a maximum sound level of no more than thirty decibels from the apparatus, while the human is performing physical exercise with the apparatus up to the maximum resistance force of the apparatus.
