Abstract

The present disclosure provides an optical transceiver, method of mapping, and method of management utilizing a plurality of Optical Channel Transport Unit layer k (OTUk) links to form an aggregate signal, such as, for example, 10 OTU2s to provide a single 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100 GbE) signal. Specifically, the present invention enables use of existing circuitry and methods at lower speed signals, e.g. 10 G, to support higher speed aggregate signals, e.g. 100 G. The present invention may be utilized to support carrier-grade OTN applications with optical transceivers such as, for example, pluggable optical transceivers. In an exemplary embodiment, the present invention includes a method which receives a plurality of signals, frames each of the plurality of signals into an OTUk frame, and manages/monitors each of the plurality of signals in an OTUk frame in the aggregate.

Claims (44)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving a plurality of signals from a first device;

framing each of the plurality of signals in an Optical Channel Transport Unit layer k (OTUk) frame;

managing the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame as a single virtualized Optical Transport Network (OTN) signal;

transmitting the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame to a second device; and

aggregating overhead data from the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame to provide aggregate data for the single virtualized OTN signal, wherein the aggregating overhead data comprises performing a logical AND function based on one or more alarms associated with the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of signals comprise transmit signals, and further comprising:

receiving a second plurality of signals comprising receive signals from the second device;

de-framing each of the receive signals from an OTUk frame;

managing the receive signals as the single virtualized OTN signal; and

transmitting the receive signals to the first device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first device comprises a host system and the second device comprises an optical transponder.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the optical transponder is disposed within a transceiver, wherein the transceiver further comprises circuitry configured to implement the receiving, framing, managing, and transmitting steps.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the transceiver is disposed connected in the host device.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

aggregating overhead data from the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame; and

communicating the aggregated overhead data to the host device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aggregating overhead data comprises performing a summation function based on one or more performance monitoring data associated with the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of signals comprises ten signals, wherein the ten signals form a single 100 Gigabit Ethernet, and wherein the OTUk comprises an OTU2, OTU2e or OTU1e.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of signals comprises ten signals, wherein the ten signals form a single 100 Gigabit Ethernet, and wherein the OTUk comprises an OTU2, OTU2e or OTU1e.

10. A method, comprising:

receiving a plurality of signals from a first device;

framing each of the plurality of signals in an Optical Channel Transport Unit layer k (OTUk) frame;

managing the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame as a single virtualized Optical Transport Network (OTN) signal;

transmitting the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame to a second device; and

aggregating overhead data from the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame to provide aggregate data for the single virtualized OTN signal, wherein the aggregating overhead data comprises performing a summation function based on one or more performance monitoring data associated with the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of signals comprise transmit signals, and further comprising:

receiving a second plurality of signals comprising receive signals from the second device;

de-framing each of the receive signals from an OTUk frame;

managing the receive signals as the single virtualized OTN signal; and

transmitting the receive signals to the first device.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first device comprises a host system and the second device comprises an optical transponder.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the optical transponder is disposed within a transceiver, wherein the transceiver further comprises circuitry configured to implement the receiving, framing, managing, and transmitting steps.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the transceiver is connected in the host device.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

aggregating overhead data from the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame; and

communicating the aggregated overhead data to the host device.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the aggregating overhead data comprises performing a logical AND function based on one or more alarms associated with the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame.

17. An apparatus, comprising:

circuitry configured to receive a plurality of signals from a first device;

circuitry configured to frame each of the plurality of signals in an Optical Channel Transport Unit layer k (OTUk) frame;

circuitry configured to manage the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame as a single virtualized Optical Transport Network (OTN) signal;

circuitry configured to transmit the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame to a second device; and

circuitry configured to aggregate overhead data from the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame to provide aggregate data for the single virtualized OTN signal, wherein the circuitry configured to aggregate overhead data is adapted to perform a logical AND function based on one or more alarms associated with the plurality of signals in the OTUk frame.
