Abstract

Methods, systems, and apparatus for a gate valve including a body, a stem, and a sensing bore. A subassembly includes a body, a stem, and a sensing bore; a bonnet contacting the body; and at least one of a vein and a plug in the sensing bore.

Claims (26)

1. A gate valve comprising:

a body defining a valve cavity;

a stem positioned within the valve cavity;

a sensing bore defined in the stem; and

a gate positioned within the valve cavity, the gate defining an actuation bore, the stem interacting with the actuation bore.

2. The gate valve of claim 1 , further comprising a top cover, wherein the top cover defines an adapter bore.

3. The gate valve of claim 2 , wherein the adapter bore is in fluid communication with the sensing bore of the stem.

4. The gate valve of claim 2 , further comprising a bushing positioned between the stem and the top cover, the bushing defining at least one radial bore and a bushing annulus.

5. The gate valve of claim 4 , wherein the sensing bore includes an axial portion and a radial portion.

6. The gate valve of claim 5 , wherein the stem defines a shaft annulus such that the sensing bore, the shaft annulus, the radial bore, the bushing annulus, and the adapter bore define a flow path.

7. The gate valve of claim 1 , wherein the actuation bore is in fluid communication with the sensing bore.

8. The gate valve of claim 7 , wherein the actuation bore is in fluid communication with a fluid bore defined in the body of the gate valve when the gate is in an open position.

9. The gate valve of claim 1 , wherein the gate is an encapsulated disc.

10. The gate valve of claim 1 , further comprising a bonnet contacting the body.

11. The gate valve of claim 1 , further comprising at least one of a vein and a plug in the sensing bore.

12. The gate valve of claim 11 , wherein the vein is in the sensing bore, the vein including a bore, the bore allowing measurement of fluid inside the gate valve.

13. A method of sensing an aspect of a water control system, the method comprising:

gaining access to the water control system through a sensing bore defined in a stem of a gate valve;

at least temporarily removing water for testing from the sensing bore; and

sensing an aspect of the removed water.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the sensed aspect includes at least one of pressure, turbidity, chlorination, and acidity.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the sensing bore includes an axial portion and a radial portion.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein at least temporarily removing water for testing from the sensing bore includes removing water through an adapter bore defined in a top cover of the gate valve.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein a bushing is positioned between the top cover and the stem, the bushing defining at least one radial bore in fluid communication with the sensing bore and with the adapter bore.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the stem further defines an external shaft annulus and wherein the bushing defines an external bushing annulus, the external bushing annulus, the external shaft annulus, the sensing bore, and the adapter bore being in fluid communication with each other.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein gaining access to the water control system through the sensing bore includes gaining access to the water control system through an actuation bore of a gate, the actuation bore interacting with the sensing bore.
