Abstract

A method controlling operation of an engine utilizing a number of preset operating parameters is provided. An operating mode of the engine is determined. An operating state of the engine is determined. A first plurality of engine parameter settings are retrieved from a memory in response to the determined operating mode and the determined operating state of the engine. The first plurality of engine parameter settings are applied to at least one control algorithm of the engine. A rate of soot accumulation from the engine is monitored. The rate of soot accumulation is compared to a predetermined soot accumulation rate threshold. A second plurality of engine parameter settings are retrieved from a memory in response to the monitored rate of soot accumulation exceeding the predetermined soot accumulation rate threshold.

Claims (33)

1. A method controlling operation of an engine utilizing a number of present operation parameters, the method comprising:

determining an operation mode of the engine;

determining an operation state of the engine;

retrieving a first plurality of engine parameter setting from a memory in response to the determined operating mode and the determined operating state of the engine;

applying the first plurality of engine parameter settings to at least one control algorithm of the engine;

monitoring a rate of soot accumulation from the engine;

comparing the rate of soot accumulation to a predetermined soot accumulation rate threshold;

retrieving a second plurality of engine parameter settings from a memory in response to the monitored rate of soot accumulation exceeding the predetermined soot accumulation rate threshold;

comparing anticipated NOx output of the engine operating at the second plurality of engine parameters to a predefined maximum NOx output; and

applying the first plurality of engine parameter settings to at least one control algorithm of the engine when the anticipated NOx output is more than the predefined maximum NOx output.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

comparing anticipated NOx output of the engine operating at the second plurality of engine parameters to a predefined maximum NOx output; and

applying the second plurality of engine parameter settings to at least one control algorithm of the engine when the anticipated NOx output is less than the predefined maximum NOx output.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

applying the second plurality of engine parameter settings;

comparing the rate of soot accumulation with the second plurality of engine parameter settings to the predetermined soot accumulation rate threshold; and

applying the first plurality of engine parameter settings in response to the monitored rate of soot accumulation falling below the predetermined soot accumulation rate threshold.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the monitoring of the rate of soot accumulation is based upon pressures in the diesel particulate filter.

5. A method of operating an engine comprising:

retrieving a first plurality of engine parameter setting from a memory;

applying the first plurality of engine parameter setting to at least one control algorithm of the engine;

monitoring an amount of soot accumulation from the engine;

comparing the amount of soot accumulation to a predetermined soot accumulation threshold;

retrieving a second plurality of engine parameter setting from a memory in response to the monitored soot accumulation exceeding the predetermined soot accumulation threshold, the second plurality of engine parameter setting producing a lower soot accumulation rate than the first plurality of engine parameter settings;

applying the second plurality of engine parameters; comparing anticipated NOx output of the engine operating at the second plurality of engine parameters to a predefined maximum NOx output; and

applying the first plurality of engine parameter settings to at least one control algorithm of the engine when the anticipated NOx output is more than the predefined maximum NOx output.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising:

comparing anticipated NOx output of the engine operating at the second plurality of engine parameters to a predefined maximum NOx output; and

applying the second plurality of engine parameter settings to at least one control algorithm of the engine when the anticipated NOx output is less than the predefined maximum NOx output.

7. The method of claim 5 further comprising:

comparing the rate of soot accumulation with the second plurality of engine parameter settings to the predetermined soot accumulation threshold; and

applying the first plurality of engine parameter settings in response to the monitored soot accumulation falling below the predetermined soot accumulation threshold.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the monitoring of the rate of soot accumulation is based upon pressures in the diesel particulate filter.
