Abstract

Communications plugs are provided which include a printed circuit board having a plurality of elongated conductive traces and a plurality of plug blades. Each plug blade has a first section that extends along a top surface of the printed circuit board and a second section that extends along a front edge of the printed circuit board. Additionally, each plug blade may have a thickness that is at least twice the thickness of the elongated conductive traces. The plug blades may be low profile plug blades that are manufactured separately from the printed circuit board.

Claims (52)

1. An RJ-45 communications plug comprising:

a housing having a plurality of slots;

a printed circuit board having a plurality of elongated conductive traces and a plurality of vias, the printed circuit board at least partly received within the housing; and

a plurality of plug blades, each plug blade having a first section that extends along a top surface of the printed circuit board, a second section that extends along a front edge of the printed circuit board and a termination post section extending from the first or second sections, the termination post section of each plug blade being received in a respective one of the vias in the printed circuit board,

wherein the first section of each plug blade is exposed by a respective one of the plurality of slots.

The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 1 , wherein each plug blade has a height above the top surface of the printed circuit board that is at least twice the height above the top surface of the printed circuit board of the elongated conductive traces, and wherein the second section of each plug blade directly contacts the front edge of the printed circuit board.

3. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 2 , wherein the first section of each plug blade directly contacts the top surface of the printed circuit board along its length and extends between about 2 mils and about 25 mils above the top surface of the printed circuit board.

The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 1 , wherein the conductive traces include first through fourth differential pairs of conductive traces, the RJ-45 communications plug further comprising an offending crosstalk circuit within the printed circuit board that is configured to generate offending crosstalk between the first differential pair of conductive traces and the second differential pair of conductive traces.

5. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 1 , wherein at least a first two of the vias are arranged as a first row of vias and at least a second two of the vias are arranged as a second row of vias, wherein the second row of vias is not collinear with the first row of vias.

6. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 1 mounted on a first end of a communications cable with a second RJ-45 communications plug according to claim 1 mounted on a second end of the communications cable to provide a patch cord.

7. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 1 , wherein the termination post section for a first of the plug blades extends from a middle portion of the first section of the first of the plug blades.

The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 1 , wherein a first of the plurality of vias is in the front edge of the printed circuit board, and wherein the termination post section of a first of the plug blades extends from an end portion of the second section of the first of the plug blades into the first of the vias.

9. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the plug blades do not extend around a bottom of the front edge of the printed circuit board onto the bottom surface of the printed circuit board.

10. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of wire connection terminals comprises a metal-plated via in the printed circuit board, and wherein the conductors of a communication cable are terminated directly into respective ones of the metal-plated vias.

11. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 4 , wherein the offending crosstalk circuit is coupled between non-signal current carrying portions of plug blades that are electrically connected to the conductive traces of the first and second differential pairs of conductive traces.

12. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of contact pads on the printed circuit board, and wherein the conductors of a communication cable are soldered to respective ones of the contact pads.

13. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 12 , wherein some of the contact pads are on a bottom surface of the printed circuit board and other of the contact pads are on a top surface of the printed circuit board.

14. A modular communications plug, comprising:

a housing having a plurality of slots;

a printed circuit board at least partly within the housing;

a plurality of wire connection terminals mounted on or in the printed circuit board;

a plurality of plug blades mounted on the printed circuit board, wherein each plug blade extends along the front edge of the printed circuit board,

wherein each plug blade includes a first section that extends along a top surface of the printed circuit board and a second section that extends from the first section downwardly along the front edge of the printed circuit board,

wherein the first section of each plug blade is exposed by a respective one of the plurality of slots,

wherein at least some of the plug blades do not extend around a bottom of the front edge of the printed circuit board onto a bottom surface of the printed circuit board.

15. The modular communications plug of claim 14 , wherein each plug blade extends at least 3 mils forwardly from the front edge of the printed circuit board, and wherein the second section of each plug blade directly contacts the front edge of the printed circuit board.

The modular communications plug of claim 14 , wherein at least some of the plurality of wire connection terminals comprises a metal-plated via in the printed circuit board, and wherein at least some of the conductors of a communication cable are terminated directly into respective ones of the metal-plated vias.

17. The modular communications plug of claim 14 , wherein at least some of the plurality of wire connection terminals comprises a contact pad mounted on the printed circuit board, and wherein at least some of the conductors of a communication cable are soldered to respective ones of the contact pads.

18. The modular communications plug of claim 14 , wherein the printed circuit board includes a plurality of vias that are arranged as a first row of vias and a second row of vias, and wherein each plug blade has a termination section that mounts into a respective one of the plurality of vias.

19. The modular communications plug of claim 18 , wherein the first row of vias extend downwardly from a top surface of the printed circuit board and the second row of vias extend into the front edge of the printed circuit board.

The modular communications plug of claim 14 , wherein the plug blades are configured as first through fourth differential pairs of plug blades, the modular communications plug further comprising an offending crosstalk circuit within the printed circuit board that is configured to generate offending crosstalk between first and second of the differential pairs of plug blades.

21. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 14 , wherein at least some of the plug blades include a termination post section that is received within a respective one of a plurality of vias in the printed circuit board.

22. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 21 , wherein the termination post section extends from a middle portion of the first section of the respective at least some of the plug blades.

23. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 14 , wherein a via is provided in a front edge of the printed circuit board, and wherein a first of the plug blades includes a termination post section that is received within the via.

24. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 20 , wherein the offending crosstalk circuit is coupled between non-signal current carrying portions of plug blades that are electrically connected to the conductive traces of the first and second differential pairs of conductive traces.

25. An RJ-45 communications plug comprising:

a housing having top side and a bottom side, the top side of the housing including eight longitudinally extending slots that are open to an interior of the housing;

a printed circuit board having a plurality of conductive traces and a plurality of vias, the printed circuit board at least partly received within the housing; and

eight plug blades mounted on the printed circuit board, each plug blade having a first section that extends along a top surface of the printed circuit board and a termination post section that extends from a middle portion of the first section, the termination post section of each plug blade being received in a respective one of the vias in the printed circuit board,

wherein the first section of each plug blade is exposed by a respective one of the plurality of slots.

26. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 25 , wherein the first section directly contacts the top surface of the printed circuit board along the length of the first section.

27. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 25 , wherein each plug blade further includes a second section that extends along a front edge of the printed circuit board and that directly contacts the front edge of the printed circuit board.

28. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 25 , wherein the conductive traces include first through fourth differential pairs of conductive traces, the RJ-45 communications plug further comprising an offending crosstalk circuit within the printed circuit board that is configured to generate offending crosstalk between the first differential pair of conductive traces and the second differential pair of conductive traces.

29. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 25 , wherein the first section of each plug blade directly contacts the top surface of the printed circuit board along its length and extends no more than 25 mils above the top surface of the printed circuit board.

30. An RJ-45 communications plug comprising:

a housing having top side and a bottom side, the top side of the housing including eight longitudinally extending slots that are open to an interior of the housing;

a printed circuit board having first through fourth differential pairs of conductive traces and first through eighth contact pads on a top surface thereof, the printed circuit board at least partly received within the housing; and

first through eighth low profile plug blades mounted on the respective first through eighth contact pads, each low profile plug blade having a first section extending along the top surface of the printed circuit board that is exposed by a respective one of the plurality of slots;

an offending crosstalk circuit within the printed circuit board that is configured to generate offending crosstalk between the first differential pair of conductive traces and the second differential pair of conductive traces

wherein the first through eighth low profile plug blades have a thickness of between 2 mils and 20 mils.

31. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 30 , wherein each low profile plug blade is soldered to a respective one of the contact pads.

32. The RJ-45 communications plug of claim 31 , wherein each low profile plug blade is connected to a respective one of the contact pads via a conductive adhesive.
